On May 25th, 2026, California Highway Patrol officers in Long Beach, California observed a black GMC pickup stopped at a traffic light with the driver allegedly appearing to be asleep behind the wheel near 223rd Street and Hesperian Avenue. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop after observing the traffic violations. The driver initially failed to yield and accelerated away from officers, leading CHP on a high-speed pursuit through Long Beach surface streets. The driver reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, ran multiple red lights, and drove with wanton disregard for public safety before eventually stopping inside a gated community where officers conducted a high-risk stop. Officers observed objective signs of alcohol impairment including slurred speech, red watery eyes, lethargic behavior, and the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver eventually submitted to a chemical breath test and recorded a 0.28% BAC — approximately 3.5 times the legal limit in California. Officers also discovered a .22 caliber rifle and spent casing inside the vehicle. The suspect was booked into the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Century Station on the following charges: 23152(A) - DUI Alcohol/Drugs 2800.2(A - Evasion - Wanton Disregard for Safety California Highway Patrol Officers Involved: Officer V.
