On February 23, 2026, just days after posting a $50,000 bond, Richard Dean Bird allegedly shot and killed Deputy Gabriel Ramirez during a traffic stop in southwest Missouri before fleeing. A massive manhunt immediately followed, bringing together local, state, and federal law enforcement officers. Bird’s abandoned vehicle was eventually located near Reeds Spring, and authorities tracked him into a heavily wooded area. But when officers began closing in, Bird opened fire. Using the darkness and rugged terrain to his advantage, the gunman repeatedly fired toward the officers trying to reach him. Deputies Josh Wahl and Austin McCall were wounded during the confrontation. Deputy Michael Hislope was later fatally shot while attempting to reach the wounded officers. The gun battle continued for more than 30 minutes before Bird was ultimately killed by return fire.
