On August 10, 2023, Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to State Road 11 in Bunnell, Florida after 911 callers reported a driver who had left the scene of a crash and was continuing to drive erratically, running off the road and nearly causing several head-on collisions. Bystanders followed the car and stayed with it until deputies arrived. The driver, 61-year-old George Clemons of Crescent City, was found with his keys underneath his leg. Deputies reported seeing suspected narcotics, an empty beer can and a small bottle of alcohol in plain view. Clemons refused field sobriety exercises and was arrested on suspicion of DUI. What happened next is why this bodycam footage is worth watching. Deputy Nick Huzior, wearing protective equipment, began field-testing a white powdery substance recovered from the vehicle. Minutes later he told Deputy First Class Kyle Gaddie that he was lightheaded, then that his hands were shaking, then that he could not feel his arms or legs. Gaddie called for EMS and administered Narcan — one dose, then a second when Huzior did not improve. Flagler County Fire Rescue transported him to AdventHealth Palm Coast, where he was treated and later released. The substance was reported by deputies to have tested presumptively positive for fentanyl. It is worth being precise about what that does and does not establish: medical experts have disputed the idea that briefly touching fentanyl through intact skin causes an overdose, and this video does not claim to settle how the substance affected him. What the footage shows is a deputy becoming seriously ill while testing suspected narcotics, and his partner acting fast. Clemons was charged with DUI, possession of fentanyl, cocaine possession, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of a legend drug without a prescription, possession of Suboxone, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The Bunnell Police Department additionally charged him with leaving the scene of a crash involving property or vehicle damage. He was held on a $25,500 bond. Bodycam via the Flagler County Sheriff's Office. Footage may be blurred or muted to protect the privacy of bystanders and witnesses. Bodycam Justice presents factual, public-record footage to educate the public about the justice system, without bias. A criminal charge is only an accusation; Mr. Clemons is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
