A shopper came out of a grocery store to find an SUV parked so close she could not open her own door. The driver was drinking from a bottle of wine and refused to move. She said she was not driving. A few minutes later she drove out of the car park anyway. A second shopper called police, followed her, and waited with her husband until officers arrived. When the officer tried to get her out of the vehicle it turned into a struggle in the snow, and the man who had followed her got out and helped hold her arm. He is not a police officer. There is no legal duty on anyone to do that. What none of them could have known is what the police already had on file. Her licence was not simply expired. She was under two separate lifetime suspensions for driving over the limit, and the more recent had taken effect thirteen days earlier. Two different judges had each ordered her not to drive without a valid licence and not to buy, have or drink alcohol at all. There are no roadside sobriety exercises in this footage and no breath sample. The affidavit explains why in four words.
