On February 17, 2022, Utah police pursued 25-year-old Zachary after a woman reported that he allegedly threatened her with a firearm and had been following her. During the pursuit, officers reportedly saw him with a gun, and he shot K9 Maya in the abdomen while she was assisting officers. Police then opened fire, ultimately killing Zachary, while Maya also died from her injuries. Zachary faced no criminal charges because he was killed during the encounter, and the district attorney later determined that the eight officers involved were legally justified in using deadly force.
