On June 27, 2023, Officers from the Orlando International Airport Police Department responded to a large group of passengers who were shouting at Spirit Airlines employees at the ticket counter over their response to a cancelled flight. According to the police report, one of the passengers, 41-year old Edward Hariston, was striking a computer keyboard behind the counter when he was instructed by officers to step away and stop shouting. When he refused, an officer attempted to restrain Hariston, who responded violently, immediately placing the officer in a chokehold and wrestling him to the ground where he briefly lost consciousness. Other officers quickly intervened, and eventually restrained Hariston, and placed him under arrest. He was ordered detained at the jail pending his trial, while his wife was charged with Resisting Arrest Without Violence and released the same night with an order to appear.
