It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: Around 3:01 a.m. on December 17, 2022, Officer Jeidy Flores from the Crystal Lake Police spotted a 2013 Hyundai Elantra that seemed to have smashed into a traffic pole at Route 31 and Three Oaks Road. She approached the driver, identified as Gloria Ruiz. A quick walk around showed heavy front-end damage and popped airbags. While talking to Gloria, Officer Flores smelled alcohol on her breath. Gloria said she was driving home from El Diablo Cantina in Carpentersville. She confessed to drinking earlier that night before getting behind the wheel. Soon after, Officer Zachary Morse showed up to help. First responders from CLFR came to check on Gloria. She turned down a trip to the hospital. The officers suspected she was impaired. They asked her to step out and do field sobriety tests. First came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Officer Morse saw no smooth eye tracking. He noted jerking at the edges and starting too soon, before 45 degrees. Next was the Walk and Turn test. Gloria missed heel-to-toe steps. She also took the wrong number of steps. Then the One Leg Stand. She didn't lift her foot right. It dropped down too early. After the tests, they offered a Preliminary Breath Test. It showed 0.167% blood alcohol—twice the 0.08% limit. The crash, the alcohol smell, her admission, and the failed tests led to her arrest for driving under the influence. Officer Flores took Gloria to the Crystal Lake Police station for booking. There, they read her the Warning to Motorist form. She agreed to give breath samples. The test came back at 0.147%, still over the limit. Gloria skipped her Miranda rights. She answered Officer Morse's questions. She said she started with champagne at a sushi bar in Schaumburg. Then two shots and a cocktail at Firebar in Crystal Lake. Last stop: a double tequila shot at El Diablo Cantina in Carpentersville. Once the papers were done, Gloria went free. She waited for her January 26, 2023 court date. A friend posted $300 cash bond for her.
