Wolf River, Wisconsin police responded to a 911 hangup call early one morning and made a horrifying discovery inside the home of well-known Union Star Cheese Factory owners David and Jan Metzig. Officers found the elderly couple shot to death with bags over their heads and covered with blankets. Investigators quickly identified their 25-year-old son, Erik Metzig, as the primary suspect after he was found missing from the scene. Erik was located hours later at a YMCA approximately 25 miles away, wearing shooting range glasses and acting suspiciously. During the investigation, police discovered a disturbing journal in Erik's room detailing plans to eliminate his parents and stage their disappearance. Erik initially pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease but later changed his plea to no contest. After attempting to withdraw his plea with new allegations that were disputed by fellow inmates, his motion was denied. Erik Metzig was ultimately sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders of his parents.
