On June 8, 2024, in Crescent City California, a Highway Patrol officer attempted to stop Joseph Wendell Nelson, a motorcyclist speeding on Lake Earl Drive. Nelson failed to comply and fled down Blackwell Lane. The pursuit, involving multiple Del Norte County Law Enforcement agencies, lasted 20 minutes and reached speeds over 120 miles per hour at times. Eventually, Nelson crashed his motorcycle into a Del Norte County Sheriff's Department patrol vehicle in the Norris Kitchen parking lot on Highway 101 North. Following a brief struggle, he was apprehended by the officers.
