Salt Lake police released body camera footage on Friday showing a fatal shooting that began with an unusual confrontation during a traffic stop involving a man unrelated to the stop. Around 1:40 a.m. on Jan. 9, an officer pulled over a pickup truck near 375 South and 765 West. While verifying the driver’s registration and license, the officer was approached by 32-year-old Chandler Grillone, who knocked on the patrol car’s window and initiated a confrontation. The officer ordered Grillone to step back, but the suspect continued to provoke him, making strange comments and refusing to comply with commands. The situation escalated when Grillone climbed into the bed of the pickup truck, prompting the officer to report that he may have a knife. Grillone then jumped out of the truck and moved toward the passenger side of the patrol car, where a civilian on a ride-along was seated. Fearing for the passenger’s safety, the officer fired five shots, hitting Grillone. The suspect collapsed and was transported to a hospital, where he died the following day. Salt Lake police later confirmed the officer suffered an injury consistent with a sharp-edged object, and a weapon was recovered from Grillone. The type of weapon was not disclosed. Court records show Grillone had a history of erratic behavior, including a 2023 arrest for random assaults during Mass at the Cathedral of the Madeleine. He was participating in mental health court at the time of his death. 0:00 - Traffic stop 0:35 - Suspect begins confrontation 2:28 - Shooting Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
