Police chase bodycam from San Diego: a stolen Lexus SUV blows through spike strips, hits a light pole that lands on a patrol car, and the driver gets out next to a gun-shaped object. This police chase bodycam footage from the San Diego Police Department's Southeastern Division shows the pursuit from inside the patrol car, the crash, the standoff with the driver on his knees, a Taser that has no effect, and the moment two officers fire when he reaches for the object. Real bodycam footage with the officers' own audio - no narration. WHAT HAPPENED January 22, 2026, San Diego. Around 12:40 PM a white Lexus SUV is stolen from a YMCA parking lot near Euclid Avenue and Imperial Avenue. About an hour later a license-plate reader flags the Lexus and officers find it on Imperial Avenue; the driver, 39-year-old Edwin Thames, stops for a moment and then speeds away, starting a pursuit east across surface streets. Spike strips deflate the two front tires, but the Lexus keeps going onto Jamacha Road toward the 125 Freeway. Near Gillespie Drive in Spring Valley (La Presa) the SUV loses control and slams into a light pole, which falls onto a pursuing patrol car. Thames climbs out; an officer reports over the radio that he dropped a gun. He raises his hands and kneels a short distance from the object while officers order him to the ground and not to reach for it. Officer 1 switches to his Taser and fires it - no effect - and Thames reaches toward the object. Officer 1 and Officer Ingram both fire; Thames is struck once. Officers move in, handcuff him and begin medical aid until San Diego Fire-Rescue arrives. OUTCOME Thames was taken to a hospital in stable condition. The object on the ground was a replica firearm made as a lighter. The San Diego County District Attorney charged him with felony evading in a motor vehicle (VC 2800.2), possession of a stolen vehicle (PC 496(d)) and vehicle theft (VC 10851). One officer suffered minor glass injuries when the light pole struck his patrol car. The San Diego County Sheriff's Homicide Unit investigates the shooting; the District Attorney reviews whether the officers' actions were lawful, the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office monitor the case, and SDPD Internal Affairs and the Shooting Review Board evaluate policy and tactics.
