-Austin, TX. -August 06, 2023. The Austin Police Department says a suspect is in custody after an officer was shot in southeast Austin late Sunday night. APD Chief Joseph Chacon says someone called 911 around 7 p.m. asking police to check on a person who had not been seen for several months at a home located on Channel Island Drive near National Park Blvd. The caller stated they tried knocking but there was no answer at the door and there was a concern for the persons safety. APD says they arrived on scene around 9 p.m. because the call was considered a lower-priority call. When officers arrived on scene they went to knock on the front door and tried to get the attention of anyone who was inside the residence but there was no answer at the door. According to APD Chief Chacon, within a few moments officers determined they were going to make forced entry and called out their presence as Austin Police Officers. Within seconds, the officers were approached by a resident with a gun. Chacon says the officers quickly retreated in an effort to deescalate the situation and called out they were with the Austin Police Department and asked the man to put the weapon down. As officers retreated and were trying to put the information out over the radio to other officers, the suspect in the house came out with the firearm and began firing his gun multiple times in the neighborhood. At 9:05 p.m., one of the officers said they were shot, according to Chief Chacon. The suspect went back inside and the SWAT team was called out. During this time, two officers fired back at the suspect. Chacon says shortly before midnight the suspect exited his residence and surrendered to police. While the suspect was being taken into custody, officers noticed he had a wound and rendered aid to the suspect. The officer who was injured in the shooting was taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. The suspect was also taken to the hospital, his condition is unknown. Both officers involved in the shooting will be put on administrative leave during the investigation. One officer has been with APD for 9 years while the other has been with the department for over 10 years. Chacon said it was a very chaotic scene and thanks the Texas Department of Public Safety for providing resources.
