WWE Superstar Sonya Deville found herself in an unexpected situation when a night at an Atlantic City casino ended with a gun arrest. In this bodycam reaction, we take a look at the police encounter involving Deville, whose real name is Daria Berenato, after officers were called to the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The incident occurred on February 19, 2023, when a valet employee reportedly discovered a handgun inside Deville’s vehicle while it was being parked at the Borgata. Atlantic City Police Department officers responded to the casino and made contact with Deville, who was one of WWE’s most recognizable female Superstars at the time. According to reports about the arrest, Deville acknowledged that the firearm belonged to her and presented officers with an out-of-state permit to carry a concealed weapon. The problem was that New Jersey has its own requirements regarding carrying firearms, and authorities determined that the permit she possessed did not authorize her to carry the handgun in New Jersey. What followed was a surprisingly calm but unusual encounter between the WWE Superstar and Atlantic City police. Officers questioned Deville about the firearm, explained the situation to her and eventually informed her that she was being taken into custody. Deville was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon before later being released on a summons. The circumstances surrounding the gun also added another layer to the story. Deville had previously been the victim of a frightening 2020 stalking and home-invasion incident in Florida, during which a man broke into her home. That incident received widespread coverage in the wrestling world and provided important context surrounding why Deville reportedly carried a firearm for personal protection. In this video, I react to the police footage and break down the encounter as it unfolds. We’ll see how officers handle the discovery of the firearm, Deville’s reaction to learning that her permit created a legal issue in New Jersey, and the moment an ordinary casino visit turns into an arrest. Sonya Deville has spent years performing in WWE, appearing on Monday Night Raw, Friday Night SmackDown and numerous WWE premium live events. That makes seeing a WWE Superstar interacting with police outside the controlled environment of professional wrestling particularly fascinating. This case is also an interesting reminder of how dramatically firearm laws can differ when traveling between states. Something a person believes they are legally permitted to possess or carry in one state may be treated very differently after crossing state lines. Watch the full reaction to see how Sonya Deville’s casino gun incident unfolded and how Atlantic City police handled the encounter from beginning to end.
