On May 21, 2023 at approximately 7:03 PM, Union Beach Police Department Sergeant Matthew Gajewski located a disabled 2020 Toyota SUV with a flat tire on Shore Road near Morningside Avenue in Union Beach, New Jersey. While speaking with the driver, 45-year-old Justine Meadow, the officer observed slurred speech and detected a strong odor of alcohol. The driver stated she was traveling from Atlantic Highlands toward Middletown and claimed she hit a pothole. She denied drinking and initially refused to provide her license, registration, and insurance. Due to suspected impairment, Sergeant Gajewski attempted field sobriety tests, including Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), Walk-and-Turn, and One-Leg Stand. The tests could not be completed properly due to noncompliance and multiple indicators of impairment. Based on the observations and sobriety test performance, the driver was arrested for DWI/DUI. Her vehicle was impounded for a mandatory 12-hour hold under New Jersey John’s Law. At police headquarters, after multiple attempts, an Alcotest recorded a BAC of 0.332%, which is over 4X the legal limit. She was issued summonses including DWI, reckless driving, careless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident. This video is edited for educational/documentary purposes and includes commentary.
