Police found Molotov cocktails and guns inside the stolen U-Haul that led officers on a crash in Springdale, Arkansas, according to a news release issued by the Tontitown Police Department Officers with the Locust Grove Police Department in eastern Oklahoma started chasing the U-Haul on U.S. Highway 412 Wednesday afternoon, according to the release. During the chase, the U-Haul hit another vehicle head-on near Colcord, Oklahoma. The chase continued along the highway and through Tontitown into Springdale. The cars went faster than 120 mph during the chase. When the U-Haul reached Interstate 49 in Springdale near Exit 70, Tontitown Police Chief Corey Jenison hit the van in order to stop it. This successfully ended the chase, while sending Jenison's vehicle rolling multiple times. "Had not immediate and aggressive actions, if they weren't taken yesterday to end this, there's very little doubt that a member of the public would have gotten hurt," said Det. Keith Lindley, public information officer for the Tontitown police department. "Our stance here is the priority of life. It's like having someone point a loaded gun into a crowd. You have a big van like this with so many people on our highway, we're going to try to end that as quickly as we possibly can." Jenison was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released. He was back on the job Thursday. Police arrested Cory Robert Mercier, 21, and Trenton Johnson, 21, both from Michigan. Officers later found Molotov cocktails and firearms inside the U-Haul van. "Initial conversations with them was that they were headed back to the Michigan area and for whatever purpose, that they were going to use those firearms or a Molotov cocktail," Lindley said. "I cannot think of a legitimate reason." Mercier and Johnson were booked into the Benton County Detention Center. The news release listed their counts as aggravated assault, criminal conspiracy, and possession of destructive devices, among others. Mercier and Johnson are also wanted by law enforcement in Westland, Michigan, where they are accused of trying to run over police officers, according to the release. Four Tontitown police cars and law enforcement vehicles from other agencies between Locust Grove and Springdale were damaged, according to the report. The resulting crash backed up traffic for miles.
