25 years ago, Jason Lopez made the ultimate sacrifice serving Pinal County. On May 4, 2001, Deputy Lopez, badge #613, was shot and killed near Casa Grande. Lopez contacted a man with a warrant. The man pulled out a gun and shot the deputy. Lopez was able to return fire and wound the man. Responding deputies became involved in a running gunfight with the man who took a hostage in a nearby residence. The hostage was able to escape after several hours, and the man surrendered nine hours later. His killer was found guilty of first-degree murder on October 8, 2003. Deputy Lopez left behind his wife, Corina, and his sons, Jason and Michael.
