Huntington Beach, California. November 20, 1999. Dr. Kenneth Stahl, 57 — a prominent osteopathic physician — took his wife Carolyn Oppy-Stahl, 44, an optometrist, to a birthday dinner. Afterward he suggested a scenic drive home along Ortega Highway — a remote winding mountain road through the Santa Ana Mountains. Two hired killers were already waiting on that road. Police found the car later that night — headlights on, engine idling. Both Kenneth and Carolyn had been shot multiple times with a .357 caliber revolver. Both were dead at the scene. For more than a year, detectives were baffled. A successful, well-liked medical couple. No apparent enemies. Almost no physical evidence on a remote mountain highway. Kenneth was treated as a victim. His family mourned him publicly. Then the case cracked open. Kenneth had been conducting a nine-year affair with a woman named Adriana Vasco. He could not divorce Carolyn — the financial settlement would have ruined him. So he arranged for her to be killed on her birthday instead. Vasco had met Dennis Godley — who called himself Tony Satton — when he came to fix her sink. He told her early in their relationship that he was a hired killer. She introduced him to Kenneth. Kenneth paid Godley the full contract amount in advance. The plan: Godley kills Carolyn on the birthday drive. Kenneth collects $1 million in life insurance. Godley killed Carolyn. Then he turned the gun on Kenneth — the only person who could identify him as the hired killer — and shot him too. Investigators searched Vasco's storage unit. Inside: driver's license photographs of both Kenneth and Carolyn, a photograph of Vasco and Godley together, and evidence she had purchased the same type of revolver used in the murders. Months before the killings, Kenneth had withdrawn $20,000 in cash. Shortly after — Vasco arrived at work wearing new jewelry from Godley. In November 2002, Vasco was convicted of first-degree murder for Carolyn and second-degree murder for Kenneth. She was sentenced to life without parole. Godley pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty. He died in prison from cancer. Before he died, Godley made one final claim through his lawyer: that he had killed Kenneth, but that Vasco had pulled the trigger on Carolyn. The claim was never proven. Vasco has always denied it. Carolyn Oppy-Stahl had no idea what her husband had planned for her birthday. If you need help — reach out. You are not alone. Did Godley lie from a prison bed to take one last piece of control — or was Vasco's role in Carolyn's death more direct than the courts ever established? He planned the scenic route home. He planned the two hired killers waiting on Ortega Highway. He planned every detail of a murder disguised as a birthday. And then the hitman killed him too — because Kenneth was the only person who could identify him. For over a year — his family mourned him as a victim. Police investigated him as a victim. The community remembered him as a victim. He was the architect of everything that happened on that road. Before Godley died in prison — he claimed through his lawyer that Vasco pulled the trigger on Carolyn, not him. Vasco has always denied it. The claim was never proven. Carolyn Oppy-Stahl went to dinner that night and trusted her husband to drive her home. Did Godley tell the truth from his prison bed — or was it one final act of control from a man who spent his entire life manipulating every situation he was in? #truecrime #california #murderforrhire #GraveFileTV
