State Rep. Enrique Sanchez was arrested early Monday morning in Cranston and charged with driving under the influence. Sanchez, a 28-year-old Democrat from Providence, was arraigned later that day in Kent County District Court, according to court records. He faces charges of first-offense DUI and refusing to submit to a sobriety test. He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance. According to a Cranston police report, officers on routine patrol noticed Sanchez's vehicle around 2:59 a.m. The Nissan he was driving had stopped at a red light at Reservoir Avenue and Legion Way but remained stationary even after the light turned green. The driver honked the horn multiple times but did not proceed. An officer approached the car to check on the driver, who appeared confused. Police body camera footage provided to The Journal shows Sanchez rolling down his window, looking disoriented. According to the report, he initially attempted to hand the officer a red debit card instead of his driver’s license. After locating and presenting his license, Sanchez told the officer he was coming from a friend’s house in Central Falls and heading home to Providence. The officer informed him that he was traveling in the wrong direction and asked if he knew where he was. Sanchez responded that he had missed the highway. As Sanchez spoke, the officer noted a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. When asked if he had been drinking, Sanchez denied consuming alcohol, stating that he only takes medication for ADHD. The body camera footage also captures an officer commenting on the hazardous road conditions. Snow had fallen across much of Rhode Island overnight, and snowflakes are visible in the video. After evaluating Sanchez's ability to perform several tasks, the officer requested his consent for a field sobriety test. Sanchez asked if he could refuse and simply take an Uber home. When informed that was not an option, he declined the test. At that point, the officer placed him in handcuffs on suspicion of DUI and read him his rights. At the police station, Sanchez "freely admitted that he takes medication, acknowledging that it affects both his mental health and driving," according to the report. He also admitted to drinking before again mentioning his medication. A pre-trial conference for his case is scheduled for Feb. 24, according to the District Court website. #EnriqueSanchez #DUIArrest #BodycamFootage #RhodeIslandNews #Providence #CranstonPolice #TrafficStop #BreakingNews #PoliticalScandal #RIPolitics #LawEnforcement #DUICharges #CrimeNews #SobrietyTest #PoliceReport
