It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: Just past midnight on August 23, 2024, Officer Edwin Rosario from the Orlando Police Department saw a Honda Civic turn left onto Division Avenue from Gore Street without signaling. He flicked on his siren and lights, prompting the driver to pull over near Anderson and Division. The officer approached and spoke with the driver, who was 25-year-old Benita Feliciano. While talking, Officer Rosario noticed the smell of burnt cannabis coming from the vehicle. Benita said they were heading home from a friend’s house but couldn’t explain why she was wearing a wristband. She denied smoking recently but admitted she had drunk alcohol earlier in the day. Her story didn’t stay consistent—she and her passenger kept giving conflicting details about where they came from and where they were headed. As more officers arrived, Benita was asked to step out of the car and do some field sobriety tests. The first was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. During this, Officer Rosario saw her eyes jerk trying to follow his finger smoothly, the nystagmus was distinct and continued at maximum deviation, and it started before 45 degrees. Vertical nystagmus was also present. Next came the Walk and Turn test. Benita missed steps, failed to touch heel-to-toe, and turned incorrectly. Her steps were also off. The last test was the One Leg Stand. She couldn’t keep her foot up right and used her arms to balance. Because of her traffic violations, the smell of burnt cannabis, and her poor performance on the tests, Officer Rosario placed Benita under arrest for DUI. A search of her car turned up an open can of White Claw. She was taken to the Orange County DUI Center but refused to blow into the breathalyzer after waiting 20 minutes.
