#news #police #crime #lapd Los Angeles, California — July 3, 2024: At approximately 9:00 p.m., uniformed patrol officers from the Southeast Area attempted to stop a white four-door sedan at the intersection of Broadway and Rosecrans Avenue. The suspect initially accelerated but then came to an abrupt stop. Before the officers could exit their vehicle, the suspect, armed with an AR-type automatic rifle, opened fire on the officers without warning. One of the officers returned fire in an officer-involved gunfire incident. The suspect fled the scene in the vehicle, and it is unknown if he was injured. The officers attempted a brief pursuit of approximately 200 yards but lost sight of the suspect near 135th Street and Broadway. Both officers sustained cuts and abrasions from glass fragments caused by gunfire that struck the windshield of the police vehicle, and one officer sustained two superficial head wounds. They were transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel, where they received treatment and were released the following morning. Numerous shell casings from the suspect's weapon were recovered at the scene, and no other officers or civilians were injured. Arrest and Charges: On July 12, 2024, Malcolm Guss Jr., 31, was arrested in connection with the incident. He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, two counts of assault with an automatic weapon against a law enforcement officer, shooting at an occupied vehicle, possession of an automatic weapon, and two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon (Case #24CMCF01337). Police recovered the suspect's Chevrolet sedan and the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. Guss was booked into jail on a $2,000,000 bond. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
