Mount Shasta, California, USA The Mount Shasta Police Department has released the body-cam footage of an officer-involved shooting on Christmas Day last year that happened on an Amtrak train. Nicholas Detweiler, 32, was a passenger on an Amtrak train traveling south through Siskiyou County prior to the incident. Detweiler's mother, Julia Detweiler of Sonoma County said in an interview in January that her son was traveling from Klamath Falls, Oregon, to visit her for Christmas. But Amtrak officials called Mount Shasta police around midnight on Dec. 25 to report that Detweiler was threatening passengers and train staff with brass knuckles, acting aggressively, and that he was possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to text police provided along with the video. The train stopped in Mount Shasta so police could help remove Detweiler from the train, officials said. The body camera footage shows officer Jeremiah Capurro arrive at the passenger train as it was coming to a stop. The video shows Capurro get out of his patrol vehicle and enter the train. Inside the darkened train car, video appears to show Detweiler sitting alone in a passenger seat, wearing a hooded sweatshirt. He was slumped in the seat as if he was asleep. The officer tapped Detweiler on the shoulder, saying "Hey bud." When the officer pulled the sweatshirt hood off of Detweiler's head he appeared startled and jumped up from his seat with his hands out. "Oh, excuse me sir. Is this the stop?" he asked. Capurro repeatedly told him to keep his hands up while shining a flashlight on the man and pointing an electric stun gun at him. Detweiler grabbed a plastic bag and asked if the officer wanted him to get off the train. Capurro told him not to "grab anything," according to the video At that point, they briefly struggled over the bag. Police said Detweiler grabbed the stun gun, and shortly thereafter the sound of crackling from the device could be heard on the video. The written narration says that Detweiler reached into his pocket and pulled out brass knuckles to wear on his hand. The two struggled as they moved into the center aisle of the train car, and according to the written narration, he hit the officer in the face, "causing near unconsciousness," according to police. A train employee grabbed Detweiler from behind to restrain him and it appeared Capurro struck Detweiler several times with a police baton. Detweiler held his hand out and asked the officer to stop while Capurro told him to get on the ground. Detweiler remained standing, to ask the officer questions. Capurro dropped his baton, pulled out his handgun, pointed it at Detweiler and told him repeatedly to get on the ground. At one point, according to the narration, Detweiler removed a glove to put the metal knuckles on his hand. As the man turned to strike the train official, Capurro fired his gun six times, striking Detweiler and the train official, who had grabbed the man around the neck during the struggle, police said. The crewmember and Detweiler fell to the ground. Capurro called in on his radio that shots had been fired, according to the video. Detweiler died on the train, police said. Capurro suffered a moderate brain concussion. The officer and the train crew member were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries, according to police. Capurro, who has been a police officer for about two years, was placed on administrative leave following the shooting, but he was back on duty as of Thursday, officials said. The Siskiyou County District Attorney's Office and the California Attorney General's Office are both investigating the incident.
