On April 17, 2024. Monroe County Dispatch received a report of a crash, the caller advised a smaller black vehicle struck a sign near the intersection and did not remain at the scene. A deputy from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department responded and witnesses stated that they got the license plate and saw the vehicle pass two more times. The deputy checked the last known location of the suspect vehicle and located it at an apartment complex parked in a parking stall assigned to apartment 2F. It was unoccupied and had significant front end damage to its driver side. A plate check of the vehicle showed that it was registered to a man named Eduardo. Deputies made contact with an upstairs neighbor of Eduardo and he led the deputies to apartment 2F. Deputies knocked several times on the door and received no answer. Shortly after knocking, they heard a loud noise consistent with a gunshot, from inside apartment 2F. They moved out the hallway and took cover by the entrance door. Several seconds later, a male exited the apartment and deputies issued commands for him to keep his hands visible. The male obeyed all commands and was detained. Another deputy advised he believed another party in the apartment was fleeing and moved toward the apartment's front door. He entered the front door and saw a Hispanic male later identified as (Eduardo). The deputy began giving him verbal commands and told Eduardo to put his hands in the air. Eduardo was not complying with the commands to put his hands up and stood with his arms crossed, then started to walk into a room out of sight. The following report is from Sgt. Heffner “I did not want the male to get into the unknown room due to the fear that he had another weapon stashed in the room, or there was a victim in the room. I still was not sure if someone was injured inside the residence. I told Eduardo no as he was walking towards the room. I left the front door and quickly advanced towards Eduardo. Eduardo just entered the room and I grabbed the back of his shirt with my left hand. I pulled Eduardo’s shirt backwards towards me causing him to lose his balance. I pulled Eduardo off balance backwards with force. This caused Eduardo to fall backwards out of the room and onto his back. He landed in the hallway in the kitchen. Eduardo had both of his hands visible and Deputy Merkel assisted me in rolling him back over onto his stomach. Eduardo was placed into handcuffs and was detained. He was left lying on the floor as I conducted a protective sweep of the residence checking for any victims who may have been injured. I opened the bedroom door that Eduardo was standing near. While checking the room for an injured person, I observed a black and brown handgun on the floor, just to the left, inside the door. The rest of the residence was cleared and no gunshot victims were located. I did observe a spent handgun shell casing on the floor near the door Eduardo was standing at along with a live handgun round on the floor nearby. The items were in plain view during the protective sweep of the residence. I also located the bullet hole in the cabinet below the sink, near the front door. Eduardo was detained and removed from the residence.” Multiple fake ID cards, including a fake social security card was located in Eduardo’s posesion. Eduardo agreed to complete field sobriety tests and take a PBT test which showed a .0173 BAC. The handgun was located in the bedroom Eduardo was standing in front of. The handgun had 3 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. A check of the serial number showed the handgun was stolen. Eduardo was booked into the jail on charges of 1st Degree Reckless Endangering Safety, Disorderly Conduct, Endanger Safety Use Dangerous Weapon, Go Armed while Intoxicated, OWI, and Receiving Stolen Property (Firearm). Eduardo was also cited for Hit and Run, and Fail to Keep Vehicle Under Control. He was found guilty for Endangering Safety Using a Dangerous Weapon, Hit and Run, Disorderly Conduct, and OWI. He was sentenced to 2 years of probation and ordered to pay $2262 in fines. This video is for educational purposes only.
