-Fall River, MA. -October 18, 2023. The Fall River Police Department has released body camera footage of two of eight arrests involving children that happened at a McDonald’s Wednesday afternoon. “While it is not our normal practice to release body worn camera footage of an incident, this footage is being released in the interest of transparency, accountability, and whereas the public interest has been taken into consideration,” a statement from the department read. Fall River police said they were originally called to CVS at 1620 President Ave. because a large group of children were causing a disturbance. However, they had moved into a McDonald’s by the time police got there. Still, police went inside to make sure there were no additional issues. “While inside, officers were informed by the management staff that the juveniles were not welcome to remain within the establishment due to the fighting behavior which had taken place prior to them entering the business,” police said. The manager had also asked the group to leave if they had not ordered any food. As officers warned the group that they needed to leave, police claim the group then got “confrontational” and refused to leave. One child left the McDonald’s and came back, which was shown in the video. He was arrested for trespassing. Police can be seen attempting to arrest the child, whose age was not released. Much of the arrest is blocked from view of the video due to the child’s backpack. But police can be seen putting handcuffs on him before walking him out of the McDonald’s and pushing him to the ground. Police said the group started “crowding” the officers and “attempting to interject themselves.” The department said that officers gave the group more than 23 warnings before making any arrests. In total, eight children were arrested. Originally, police had said seven children were arrested. All of them are facing trespassing charges and some are facing additional charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and assault and battery on a police officer. None of their ages were released. There will be an increased presence of police in the area Thursday “to ensure no issues arise,” Fall River police added. The investigation is ongoing.
