Description

Around 9:56 PM on July 8, 2026, Patrolman David Bowen with the Plainsboro Police Department observed a gray 2018 Jeep Wrangler that failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Tamarron Drive and Plainsboro Road while making a left hand turn onto Plainsboro Road eastbound. The driver then made a left turn onto Scotts Corner Road before making a right turn onto Dey Road. He eventually activated his emergency lights to a traffic stop, and the driver pulled over on Dey Road in the area of Petty Road. He exited his patrol car and made contact with the driver, who was later identified as Heidi Hanna.

As he was speaking with Heidi, Patrolman Bowen detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. She initially claimed that she was coming from a friend’s house, but later admitted that she had been at Caddyshack Bar & Grill. Based on his suspicions of impairment, Heidi was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises after Patrolwoman Madeline Brunck arrived on scene to assist.

Patrolman Bowen started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Patrolman Bowen observed the lack of smooth pursuit and distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test, but Heidi was unable to complete this test and further testing was terminated.

Based on her erratic driving, her indicators of impairment, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier that evening, and her inability to satisfactorily complete the field sobriety exercises, Heidi was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Her vehicle was impounded for a mandatory 12-hour hold under John’s Law. Heidi was transported by Patrolman Bowen to the Plainsboro Township Police Department for further processing.

At the Plainsboro Township Police Department, Heidi was read the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators, and she agreed to submit breath samples. Her Alcotest results indicated a BAC level of 0.157%, which was about double the legal limit of 0.08%. After they finished processing her, Heidi was transported to the hospital for further evaluation based on some concerning remarks that she had made earlier.

Patrolman Bowen issued Heidi the following 19 traffic citations:
1) Operating under the influence (39:4-50)
2) Reckless driving (39:4-96)
3) Careless driving (39:4-97)
4) Unsafe operation of a motor vehicle (39:4-97.2)

12) Failure to wear seat belt (39:3-76.2F)
13) Improper turn at traffic control signal (39:4-115)

As of August 18, 2026, this particular case is still pending before the Plainsboro Township Municipal Court. Heidi has previously been arrested on charges of criminal mischief (2C:17-3(B)(2) ) in East Brunswick, New Jersey on December 29, 2011.

The New Jersey Supreme Court has previously affirmed in Salzano v. North Jersey Media Group, 993 A.2d 778 (2010) that “The fair-report privilege reflects the judgment that the need, in a self-governing society, for free-flowing information about matters of public interest outweighs concerns over the uncompensated injury to a person's reputation.” This video advances a compelling public interest. The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
