Description

REAL POLICE BODYCAM footage captures the frigid arrest of a suspected drug trafficker as officers attempt to conduct a rights advisement in the bitter La Crosse winter. This bodycam video documents the practical challenges of conducting constitutional procedures while battling extreme temperatures.

In this police bodycam footage, officers have located and detained 43-year-old Drae Shaun Broadnax after he fled from a vehicle during a high-risk traffic stop. An officer begins the formal Miranda process: "Are you-" before being interrupted by the harsh reality of winter policing: "Ah, shit, it's cold in here." This candid moment, captured on the bodycam, demonstrates how environmental conditions impact even critical constitutional procedures.

The officer continues with the rights advisement, asking the key question required before interrogation: "Are you willing to waive those rights and talk to me?" Broadnax's affirmative response—"Yeah"—establishes his willingness to speak with investigators despite having been advised of his right to remain silent. This critical legal foundation, recorded on police bodycam, ensures the admissibility of any statements that follow.

Prioritizing both the investigation and human comfort, the officer suggests relocating: "Come on, let's get in the car, please." The suspect appears momentarily confused about directions: "Hold on. Or somewhere. Which way?" followed by "Hold on. Hold on." The extreme temperature dominates the interaction as he exclaims: "Holy shit, I'm cold. Fuck. so."

The officer acknowledges the discomfort while indicating it will be temporary: "Just change when I get for you. I know it's cold. You'll be a little bit." This exchange, documented on bodycam, shows the practical balance between procedural requirements and human conditions during winter arrests.

According to police reports, this February 3, 2023 incident began when an inmate informant arranged a drug buy with Broadnax, leading to a vehicle pursuit and foot chase that ended with his discovery in a garage. A search of his abandoned vehicle revealed 56.4 grams of methamphetamine, 7.5 grams of cocaine, 5.3 grams of marijuana, and $420 in cash from his person.

This police bodycam footage highlights the real-world challenges of conducting constitutional procedures in extreme conditions, demonstrating how officers must adapt to environmental realities while ensuring proper legal protocols are followed during drug trafficking arrests.
