Description

Just before three in the morning on June 20, 2026, a man on his way to work on a rural road in Flagler County, Florida, saw a car coming at him head on. He went into the ditch to get out of the way. He could have kept driving. Instead he turned around, followed the car, filmed it through his windscreen, and handed the video to a dispatcher before a single deputy arrived.

Deputies found the car nose down off a dirt road with its front end torn open. The driver told them she had not hit anything and that the damage was already there. Then, answering a question about who else was in the car, she volunteered twice that she had not been drinking. Nobody had raised drinking. The deputy told her he could smell it on her.

What happens next is a piece of Florida law that is performed on camera and named out loud. Florida compels a driver to tell a crash investigator how a crash happened, and because that answer is compelled, the same statute makes it unusable against the driver in a criminal case. So a deputy who begins to suspect a crime cannot simply carry on. He has to end the crash investigation, say so, read the driver their rights, and start a second investigation from scratch. The deputy in this video stops and explains exactly that, and calls it by the name deputies use for it, a changing of the hat.

Field sobriety exercises follow, on an unlit dirt road, with an orange line of duct tape laid down for a walk and turn. Before they begin she tells him one of her legs is shorter than the other and that she has surgery scars and is nearsighted. That disclosure matters, and the video explains why it does and what it does not do.

Her account of the night moves four separate times across two body cameras. You can watch each step.

Source agency: Flagler County Sheriff's Office, Flagler County, Florida.
Reported charges: driving under the influence, section 316.193, Florida Statutes; three counts of driving under the influence with property damage; and three counts of leaving the scene of a crash, section 316.061, Florida Statutes. The sheriff's office reported her blood alcohol level at more than twice the legal limit.

This is public police body camera footage obtained through a public records request. We add commentary and analysis explaining what is happening and the law behind it. The footage has been edited and condensed for length. The order of events is preserved. The department muted sections of the audio before releasing it, just over nine minutes of the main body camera in total. Those silences are theirs, not ours.

Names have been left out of the title and thumbnail. Identifying details spoken on camera have been removed from the audio.
