Description

Around 7:11 AM on January 18, 2025, Officer Ibraheim with the Plainfield Police Department first responded to the 600 block of South 2nd Street on a report of 3 suspicious individuals inside a silver 2011 Hyundai Elantra. Officer Torres arrived on scene shortly afterwards to assist Officer Ibraheim with translation. There were 2 males and 1 female inside the vehicle, and there were also open containers of alcohol inside the vehicle. They suspected that the vehicle may be stolen, and they ordered the occupants to exit the vehicle.

The female, later identified as Cristina Poma, was initially calm as the officers were interacting with the other 2 males. However, she quickly became irate when she was told that the vehicle was being towed and she would be unable to retrieve her money and belingings inside the vehicle. Her demeanor quickly changed and she struck Officer Torres in the face. Based on her actions, she was placed under arrest.

Cristina initially resisted when she was being placed in handcuffs. After she was placed under arrest, she was transported to the Plainfield Police Department for further processing. At the station, she was photographed and fingerprinted. After the officers were finished processing her, she was released pending her court appearance. Cristina was charged Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (2C:12-1B(5)(A)).

We are in compliance with YouTube's Fair Use Policy because we edit several long clips into a concise story. This is similar to other law enforcement channels on YouTube. All videos and case documents were obtained pursuant to the New Jersey Open Public Records Act, N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 et seq. (P.L. 2024, c.16). Defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty.

The New Jersey Supreme Court has previously affirmed in Salzano v. North Jersey Media Group, 993 A.2d 778 (2010) that “The fair-report privilege reflects the judgment that the need, in a self-governing society, for free-flowing information about matters of public interest outweighs concerns over the uncompensated injury to a person's reputation.” This video advances a compelling public interest. The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
