Description

On November 23, 2024, Las Cruces Police Sergeant Chavez stopped a vehicle that allegedly ran a red stop light. The 21-year-old driver claimed she had just been pulled over a few minutes prior for not having her headlights on. Sgt. Chavez explained that he was not stopping her for the headlights, but because she had failed to stop at a red light. The police report indicates that Sgt. Chavez could smell alcohol coming from inside the vehicle. He asked the woman to step out of the vehicle in order to see if the smell was coming from her. She initially denied consuming alcohol and stated that she had been at home, but her drunk boyfriend called her to come and pick him up. Sgt. Chavez's report notes that the woman was wearing clothes that would not indicate that she was home all night. She was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). She was transported to the Las Cruces police station, where she submitted to an evidential breath test. The result of the test was 0.07% BAC. She was ultimately taken to the Dona Ana County Detention Center to await her initial appearance. The end of the video contains bonus footage of the officers dealing with her drunk boyfriend.
