Description

On June 16, 2025, Las Cruces police officers responded to a call involving a vehicle driving recklessly and doing "donuts" in a dirt lot. Officer Shannon arrived first and approached the vehicle. It was being driven by an 18-year-old woman who admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening while in Mexico. The woman also admitted to "drifting" in the dirt lot with her dog in the car. She was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests. She completed the horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN) test, but refused to complete any additional tests unless she was able to speak with her mother. She was placed under arrest for Driving While Under the Influence. She then became extremely emotional and could not understand how officers developed probable cause to arrest her. She was given numerous chances to contact friends and relatives to pick up her dog, but no one was able or willing to take care of the animal. At the police station, the woman refused to submit to a breath test. Her case is still open and all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
