Can I have your license, registration, and proof of insurance? >> Yes. >> What was What was up with that little maneuver there? >> Around 12:42 a.m. on September 14, 2025, Officer Shane Daily with the Verona Police Department observed a white 2021 Toyota Corolla passenger vehicle in the right turn lane on Pompton Avenue before continuing south onto Mount Prospect Avenue. Officer Daily activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, and the driver pulled over the vicinity of Mount Prospect Avenue and Sunset Avenue. After the driver pulled over, Officer Daily exited his patrol car and made contact with the driver who was identified as 18-year-old Maricela Siri Omana. >> Sorry, I don't know why I did that. >> Okay. Where you headed tonight? >> I'm headed back home. >> Okay, where you coming from today? >> I'm coming from my boyfriend's. >> Okay, where's he live at? >> He lives in um in William Palace. >> William Palace, okay. Where do you live at? >> In North. >> You live in North? Okay, you got your driver's license on you? >> Yeah. I live in North. >> That's the car. All right, listen, I'm going to ask if I can see him. You uh you had anything to drink tonight? >> No. >> No? Okay, so what's up with the uh with the two with the two open containers? A lot earlier as in when? >> Like like 3 hours ago. >> 3 hours ago? Okay. So, a- anything else besides the uh the two that I can see 3 hours ago? >> No. >> Nothing else? >> I couldn't even I'll do what somebody does cuz I do what you doing. I swear I'm not. >> Okay, I got you. See you in a second, all >> It's not going to be testing. She's uh 18 years old. No, I think it's okay. She's uh How big are you guys? >> As he was speaking with Maricela, Officer Daily observed two open containers of cut water inside the vehicle, and he suspected that the driver may be impaired. Maricela told the officer that she had consumed those drinks about 3 hours prior, but denied being under the influence at the moment. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Maricela was eventually asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises after Sergeant Robert Maguire arrived on scene. >> All righty, can you step out for me? >> Yeah. >> We're going to We're going to walk over here, okay? >> Okay. >> So, we're going to go somewhere that's flat, all right? >> Okay. >> You want the sidewalk? All right, you're good right here. And turn around, and me. All right, so just because I I saw the two open containers in the car. >> The first exercise was the horizontal gaze nystagmus HGN test. The second exercise was the walk and turn test. During the walk and turn test, Maricela failed to touch heel to toe on each step and took an incorrect number of steps. The final exercise was the one leg stand test. And she failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and did not count in the correct sequence. >> It's all right. I understand that >> Yeah, now you you said that you were you said that you were drinking and everything. I'm just going to do tests to make sure you're okay. >> I understand. >> All right, do you have any medical problems that I should know about? Anything like that? Nothing wrong with your eyes? Nothing like that? Nothing that would prevent you from following the tip of my finger? Nothing crazy like that? Okay. Uh you wear contacts? >> Mhm. >> No? >> No. >> No? No No glasses? Nothing like that? Okay. All right, so what I'm going to have you do is just uh So for the first test I'm just going to test your eyes, okay? So what I'm going to have you do is just put your place your feet together. And then I'll have you Yeah, yeah, I'll kind of you can uh I'm just going to give my phone your phone to uh my sergeant here, okay? And then just uh place your hands to your side, okay? What I'm going to have you do is I'm going to have you follow the tip of my finger with your eyes and your eyes only. Keep your head straight ahead, okay? Can you see the tip of my finger? >> Yes. >> All right, can you uh touch the tip of my finger? >> Touch it? >> Yeah, just touch it. All right, perfect. >> Okay, good. Uh so, this next test is going to be the the walk and turn test, okay? Uh so, what I'm going to have you do is I'm going to have you get in the starting position, and then I'll explain the instructions, okay? >> Okay. >> Once I get you in the starting position, don't start the test until I tell you to do so. Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, what I'm going to have you do is I'm going to have you imagine an imaginary line in front of you. Uh we're actually going to turn around. It's going to be easier. Cuz uh yeah, just uh come to this come to this one right here. And then just face me, okay? All right. So, just imagine an imaginary line on the ground, okay? What I'm going to have you do is I'm going to have you place your right foot on that line, and then you're going to place your left foot in front of your right foot. >> Right on the toe right here? >> Yep. With the heel of your left foot touching your right foot, with your hands at your side, okay? Uh I see you're wearing flip-flops. Is it going to be easier for you if you want to go barefoot? Do you want to do that? Okay. All righty. Any questions about the starting position? >> Uh like this, right? And then walk? >> Yep. Yeah, so what >> count the number? >> So, I'll I'll to the whole thing. I'm just going to get you in the starting position first, okay? So, go ahead and get in the starting position, all right? So, the start So, the starting position is going to be right foot on the line, left foot in front of the right foot with the heel of your left foot touching the toe of your right with your hands at your side, okay? So, go ahead and get in the starting position. All right, do not start the test and do not move from this position until I tell you to do so. Do you understand? >> I understand. >> All right, so when I tell you to start, what you're going to do is you're going to take a series of nine heel-to-toe steps. >> Okay. >> All right? So, you're going to take those nine steps on the line. Once you get to your ninth step, you're going to conduct a U-turn in a fashion that I tell you and take nine heel-to-toe steps back, okay? It's going to look something like this. 1 2 3 You'll leave your front foot planted. And then you're going to take a series of small steps in order to turn around. Take nine heel-to-toe steps back. 1 2 3 >> Okay. >> I did three steps. You're going to take nine steps. >> Wait, can I practice the turn? Just the way. Does it have to be perfect? >> So, it's So, I'll explain it again, okay? So, what you're going to do is you can take nine heel-to-toe steps back. You're going to take nine heel-to-toe steps. Once you get to your ninth step, you're going to leave your front foot planted and then using your other foot take a series of small steps in order to turn around and walk nine heel-to-toe steps back, okay? It's going to look something like this. >> Now, I know the heel-to-toe steps are hard. >> 1 2 I It's It's a whole process. I just just >> Yeah. Yeah. >> 1 2 3 >> Okay. >> 1 2 3 I did three steps. You're going to do nine steps, okay? >> While you're doing the test, I want you to look at your feet, keep your hands at your side, count your steps out loud, and once you start the test, do Do stop. >> Okay. >> Okay? Do you have any questions? >> No questions. >> You may begin. >> 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Oh, sorry. 10. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 >> All right, good. All right, so this last one is going to be uh the one leg stand, okay? The starting position one for this one's going to be this same thing, feet uh feet together, hands at your side, okay? >> Okay. >> Stay in this position until I tell you to start, okay? >> Okay. >> Once I tell you to start, you're going to lay You're going to raise one foot, either foot of your choice, approximately 6 in off the ground and count in the following manner: 1,001, 1,002, 1,003 until I tell you to stop, okay? Okay. >> Wait, can I Can you show me first? >> Yeah, I'm I'm going to I'm going to show you, okay? All right, so it's going to look something like this, okay? 1,001, 1,002, 1,003, 1,004, 1,005 and so on until I tell you to stop, okay? While you're doing this test, keep your hands at your side, look down at your toe, and count everything out loud, okay? >> Okay. >> All righty. >> Okay, ready? >> Do you have Do you have any questions? >> No questions. >> No? Okay. All right, you may begin. >> 1,001, 1,002, 1,003, 1,004, 1,005, 1,006, 1,007, 1,008, 1,009 uh 2,000, 2,001, 2,002, 2,003, 2,004, 2,005, 2,006, 2,007, 2008, 2009, 3000, 3001, 3002, 3003. >> All right. >> 1001, 1002, 1003. >> All right, you're good. >> Based on her traffic infractions, the open containers of alcohol inside her vehicle, and her performance on the field sobriety exercises, Maricela was placed under arrest for DWI. As she was being placed under arrest, Maricela insisted that she was not drunk. Her vehicle was impounded for a 12-hour hold according to John's Law, while Officer Frank O'Neill transported Maricela to the neighboring Cedar Grove Police Department for further processing. >> All righty. So, just based off the tests and everything, and the fact you are 18, right? >> Yeah. >> So, just based off the tests and everything, and the fact that you are 18, just go ahead and turn over your hands behind your back for me. >> Wait, I'm not drunk. >> That's I I understand. Just because of how old you are and everything. What's your name? >> Maricela. >> Okay, Maricela. >> All right, you have the right to remain silent.
