[Music] what was meant to be a simple case of returning a child to his Guardians quickly escalated into attempted manslaughter and she D engine and she has them in a car with no car SE please calm down it's okay it's okay what's going on control hold on October 1st 2023 in San Pedro Los Angeles Harbor division uniformed officers received a radio call regarding a child custody dispute at gaffy Street and Capitol Drive in a local store parking lot apparently when the child's foster parent and his friend April Barnes went to pick the boy up from a visit with his mother the mother refused to turn the boy over Miss Barnes reportedly said that the mother wouldn't give him back that she was suicidal and had a gun worried April and her friend called 911 to get help wait wa hold on they comment um I I I I have a mom who's taking a child that I have custody of and I and I need help because she's getting ready to get into a car and drive said you have custody of it like Soul custody I have soul custody yes and she's getting ready to pull off in a vehicle right now she's starting the she's starting the vehicle up right now okay and she's R engine and she has them in a car with no car SE please oh my God uh it's a it's a son is she the mother of the child after receiving details from the guardian officers and a supervisor drove off to meet with a suspect a 39-year-old Woman by the name of Mesa Scott upon finding her they began asking her for the reasons behind her actions calm down it's okay it's okay what's going on don't I'm in no I just didn't want the car please don't call place before you run up on me like that I'm in distress okay's you need another help for that don't do that pleas I'm begging y please don't do that don't do what run up on me look at me I'm I why I was brought here unable to comprehend Miss Scot's poor attempted an explanation the officer calmed her down and began to ask her questions regarding the situation instead this is your son correct yes sir okay um and how old is he five five okay now explain to me before anything happened today what's the cussy situation with your son the cussy situation with my son was that my cousin take care of my son and protect him okay by all cause until his mother gets out of jail and able to commit uptain custody herself okay so there is a court order that's staying this no there was a court order is closed okay this is a r okay so tell me what the court order originally said the court order said said for me okay to listen to my cousin okay by all means necessary because you C cousin is this gentem over here right yeah okay okay what miscot failed to recognize though was that this wasn't how children are taken into custody since the foster parents had physical custody while the mother had legal custody she was allowed to make important decisions first son but was not allowed to stay with him if she wanted to change this she had to file papers with a court to ask for an order not simply kidnap the child still no closer to figuring out the circumstances that led to the current situation the officer interrupted her once again to get her back on track however miscot failed to do so as she went off on another tangent we Haven seen no Jud let's stop that because obviously we're talking into two different languages here CU you I understand because I'm up why don't son earlier than he supposed to when is he supposed to pick him up at 9:30 p.m. from 14 native so at 930 p.m. he's supposed to 9:45 9:45 p.m. tonight today right now which what time is it it's like uh 8:45 okay so but he came over at 6:00 in the morning all right and then what happened then did he take your sign or no because that's why I'm trying to get to that's what I'm trying to get this understanding so y'all don't just RAM and kill me or hurt me you know what I mean going off anybody sorry I I've been hurt enough I just got ambushed in my house on Monday while my son was there get there okay thank fed up with making no progress the officer went over to asking his colleague who was gathering information from the child's Guardian what's going on they don't everybody knows their right and they don't give I about my she does have to him but they've been letting her see her son because said she's been doing better so they gave her permission to see him but today when they called to for her to return the child um she has been kind of evading them so they had to come here and track her down and she's just refusing to get the child all they want I should have called kidnapping on him okay oh weid so they're saying that dcsf decided who supposed to there's no order Sergeant that's on me because they don't have an actual like they don't paper want me to just contact DCFS to see if there's an open case on it already just to verify after learning that Miss scottt took the child without permission and refused to give him back the officers began planning a course of action after deciding to have their Department take the child into custody they returned to miss Scott to inform her of this fortunately she didn't make matters easy this is what we're going to do we're going to take custody of your son yeah we're going to go back to the station yeah and all of us going to and wait no your son's going to come with us yeah okay and then we'll have to figure out we have to have dcsf come out create a whole new case start over again that's what I'm saying okay there's no agre thank you well no no thank you okay or we can gra I'm just playing I'm telling you an officer began explaining to mcot what the Department of Children and Family Services told him during this interaction the woman continued to interrupt him making it more difficult for the police to cooperate as a result the officer shifted plans to secretly let the original Guardians take the child home I spoke to the supervisor down at the Cs and they informed me that on 201 there 2019 no this illegally we see this is how I know this NE since 2017 yeah so now what's the next one okay last okay it was who I'm just excited that's it yeah yeah based on the information that Department Child Services it's okay all right damn like what why are y'all doing this to me we're not we're just y yall did look where where's his backpack he told my son that he not safe look how he holding my son where's his backpack I'm your anger I love you son don't fight relax y have a good night you too now with the child returning to his uncle and miscot driving away the altercation seemed to be over with however while the mother was driving away she made a decision that would be far worse than a simple case of wrongful custody 3189 the inci number 3189 3 oh hey hey [Applause] hey 51 off help shots fired the target parter where are you get in the car get in the car out of nowhere with no thought to the consequences you would face Miss got Ram straight into her son's Foster mother with her vehicle and then fled the scene of the crime there's no doubt that such a Savage Act of brutality immediately warranted multiple charges such as assault or battery which can result in up to 6 months in a county jail and a fine of up to $1,000 attempted first-degree murder which is premeditated and willful can be punished by life in state prison hit and run which as a misdemeanor can carry a possible sentence of up to 6 months in county jail as well as a fine of up to $1,000 clearly there was no longer a question of whether or not miss Scott was allowed to have custody of her son since the only thing on the officer's Minds was her immediate capture and arrest the Cur hey guys coming back at the officers coming back to gy off I believe there a shepher here she's going to go over the stomach hold up hold up hold up hold up hold up after the incident police later confirmed that miscot suffered minor injuries due to crashing into a tree not because of the shots that were fired at her as she was racing out of the parking lot meanwhile the Foster mother April Barnes who was hit by the car was fortunately treated and released at the scene the Los Angeles Fire Department Personnel also responded to the termination of the pursuit and transported mcot by ambulance to a local hospital where she was treated for injuries that she sustained during the Collision she was later cleared for booking by medical staff upon her release miscot was unsurprisingly arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and felony evading along with her vehicle being impounded as evidence after witnessing the events that unfolded the child's foster parent began trying to relocate him to family members outside of the state in an attempt to provide him with a safer environment
