931, where are you at? >> I'm not going to outperform you, okay? Like, you guys are [clears throat] fucking retarded. >> Okay. >> Duck into the rich gas station. >> Okay. From the rich gas station, you went to the Shell gas station. >> Sorry. >> So, obviously, you knew you what I was doing. >> I saw you. I didn't know you were doing for me, but >> on January 8th, 2024, a Grand Travers County deputy was on routine patrol when he spotted a vehicle obstructing an intersection. Suspiciously, the vehicle sees the deputy and pulls off into a gas station before circling back on the exact same road again. Spotting the deputy, the driver then pulls off into a different gas station. With the deputy hidden, the suspect proceeds forward. Unbeknownst to the suspect, the deputy is now positioned perfectly behind him and watches as the suspect swerves, crosses the center lane, and nearly collides with multiple vehicles. The deputy initiates a traffic stop, but the suspect doesn't stop. He takes deputies on a pursuit and crashes four separate times. >> What was your initial violation? >> Initially, I found him in the intersection of Acme Corners and then he bounced around to different gas stations. Running red light almost. He just hit a car, northbound car. Unfortunately, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office doesn't have dashboard cameras, but the body cams were rolling. The suspect takes deputies south on US 31 where he crashes into the curb trying to turn onto four Mile Road. He then takes deputies back northbound before again turning around at the Acme Meer roundabouts. Deputies observe as he blows the red light at 31 and 72, striking a citizen's vehicle. He continues back southbound where he attempts to ditch the deputies in the Ace Hardware parking lot. He is unsuccessful and deputies chase him back through Mount Hope, then on to 72, then back on southbound 31 again. The suspect's luck runs out and he turns into the Holiday Inn off Mount Hope Road. The initiating deputy knows there is only one entrance, so he stays back to deploy stopsticks. Other deputies are in hot pursuit and watch as the vehicle crashes into some shipping crates at the rear of the property. Get out of the fucking car. SHOW ME YOUR HANDS. STOP. POLICE. STOP. Cell phone on foot. >> You got me. >> GET ON THE FUCKING GROUND. >> GET ON THE fucking ground. Lay on your chest. >> You got me, bro. >> You got me. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> Central 31. I'm in the woods behind the sleep in by the trash pins. I'm on top of them. Any move you will be tased. Is that clear? Yes, sir. >> Sit up. One, two, three. On your feet. >> One, two, three. Up. No, not going to your car. Find your stance for me. What >> one? I wish you'd make us understand why this happened and you slammed into a car intersection. >> Did I? >> Yeah. >> Yeah, you crashed into >> All right. I don't know. Why? Why are you running? [snorts] >> Get drugs in the car. >> Oh, there's just marijuana. Drunk. >> I've been drinking. >> Is that why somebody >> This is what caught my attention. I was stopped at that acne corners over there. Okay, >> you were halfway into the intersection already. When I go through the intersection and start heading south on 31, you ducked into the rich gas station. Okay. And the rich gas station, you went to the Shell gas station. >> Saw you. >> So, obviously, you knew you what I was doing. >> I saw you. I didn't know you were doing for me, but I was hoping you weren't. >> You guys see the score of the fucking Michigan Washington game? >> Not important right now, man. >> Yeah, it is. >> No, it's not. >> It is. Your priorities are mixed up. >> I actually thought I was going to out. >> I said I actually thought I was going to outrun you guys. >> Thought wrong. >> Well, I I mean, you get to a point where it's just like, what do you do? >> Stop, pull over like the majority of the public does when the lights turn on behind them. >> It's really how it goes. So, you see how silly that was? >> Okay. >> Okay. All right. Get in the back of this car. >> I understand this one. >> Sorry to >> Sorry, you would have stopped. >> You're my foot's still stuck. >> Pull it in. >> There we go. With the suspect identified and safely in the back of the patrol vehicle, other deputies go to the scene of the crash where a Michigan State Trooper had already begun assisting the driver. >> How's it going? She's just a little shook up. This is her boyfriend. She came back. Um >> I just got a record now and all the stuff obviously. I mean, I'm more than willing to take the UD10 if but if you're going to do it all part of the chase. Okay. >> Um >> appreciate it. >> Yeah, no worries. Ma'am, I'm glad you're okay. All right. >> Thank you. Yeah. Thank you for stopping. >> Hey, no worries. Like you said, I'm glad it could have been way worse. So, you know, it's uh good you're okay. All right. All right. You're in good hands here. >> With no outstanding suspects and all victims of Ben's being tended, deputies go into evidence gathering mode. >> You want to take him out of cuffs and see if he'll do sobrieties? >> Sure. >> Hey, Ben. >> Yes, sir. >> Are you willing to perform sobrieties for me? standard uh field surprises. >> I mean, what's the purpose? >> Just to see how you're if you're intoxicated, if you're able to drive, >> you don't want to do them. >> Well, I mean, I don't know. >> I mean, it's up to you. >> I'll do it. It's just kind of silly. >> All right. Step on out. Hey, >> who's uh whose vehicle is this? >> That's my girlfriend. >> Okay. >> She's right here. Sleep in. >> What's your girlfriend's name? >> Oh, Sleeping's over there. >> Yeah. What's her name? >> She wasn't She wasn't in the vehicle with you, though. >> No, no, no, no. She was at home waiting for me to come home. >> Well, I'm going to go break the newser that her car is getting impounded. So, >> deputies attempt to conduct SFSTs or standardized field sobriety tests on Ben where they noted a smell of intoxicants coming off of his person along with bloodshot watery eyes. After performing the first evaluations, Ben's cooperation begins to dwindle and he voices his discontent with the deputies. >> Five all the way nine heel to toe. Why are we doing this? >> Because I'm I'm engaging where you're at. >> Like honestly, like why are we doing this? >> Do you not want to do it? >> Like I mean I'm not going to like outperform your expectations. >> I'm just trying to gauge where you're at. >> Like no, this is just ridiculous. I'm not going to outperform your expectations. Like just ridiculous. Put >> your hands behind your back. >> Like you don't want to do them. You don't want to do them. >> It's just retarded. It's It's your opportunity to >> It's not my breath. Like, no, it's not. So, >> I'm not going to outperform you. Like, you guys are fucking retarded. >> Okay. >> Lower the tone. >> You're fucking retarded. Ain't nobody out >> you [music] guys on a fucking field sobriety. Ain't nobody outperforming you. >> Trying to say you're out. >> No, you're just fucking jacking me off, Benjamin. Just >> you're fucking jacking me off. >> All right. >> Fucking clearly fucking retarded. Let's go back to sitting in the vehicle. >> Watch the head. >> Go. >> Did you say the arm? >> Take a seat. >> You want your seat belt? >> Yes, please. >> Safety first. >> You bet. I don't know if I'll be able to reach it, but don't worry. I'll try my hardest for you. I'm sure you will. Safety's paramount for us over here. Dude, I I'm going to wash my body cam cuz it was the most athletic thing I've done in a long time. And I know I'm going to pay hell for it tomorrow. But I went to the hardware store parking lot. >> Oh yeah. >> And dude, >> you're just going to spear them from ants? >> Oh, dude. I I straight up cleared those fences. No, like no fucking prep. just ran up, jumped him, and then on the second one, I hit a wood pile and ate shit. >> Well, I was I was interviewing my guy from my parole aboundonder from the quality the other day. >> Something comes up. >> I know. Then I heard the siren. I'm told I'm like, "Hey, thanks for your cooperation. Got to go." >> Can you do me a favor? Oh, >> you are you going to hang out here for a bit? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Surve got a light. While Ben was being transported to hospital for a blood draw, other deputies spoke with his girlfriend and registered owner of the vehicle where they shared the bad news. >> Crash He did he kissed a car out there and then when he finally tried to flee from me on foot, he bumped into a metal ConX container back there. >> He's such an idiot. I told him, "Do not drive my car if you're going to drink." Cuz he's intoxicated, isn't he? >> Heavily. Yeah. >> Heavily. Oh. So he's up in months right now for a blood draw for DUI. OWI. >> Third DUI. >> That's his third, too. >> Yep. >> Okay. >> Going to prison. >> At the hospital, Ben shares his spirited opinions about one of the deputies not being a football fan and becomes belligerent. >> I mean, like coming into the game, you didn't know you was in the national title game. You didn't know that. Obviously, you're not a football fan. You're right. Or do you watch cartoons and fucking stupid ass shit? kind of fun. >> Oh, that's a fucking lie.
