On April 6th, 2025, deputies with the Ingam County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to US 127 near Barnes Road after multiple callers reported a man walking the wrong way along the highway. I don't >> It's his name. >> Do you work tomorrow? >> Uh, I do now. Officers immediately began rendering first aid, but Cameron Cawthorne was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. On March 4th, 2026, the Michigan Attorney General's office concluded its investigation into the shooting. The report determined that the Ingam County Sheriff's deputy acted in self-defense and in defense of another responding officer when they fatally shot Cameron Cawthorne. According to the attorney general's findings, during the roughly 11-minute encounter, the deputy told Cawthorne he was there to help more than 20 times and ordered him to drop the knives more than 15 times. The investigation did not identify or publish a motive for Cawthorne's actions, and the case has since been closed.
