PUT YOUR [ __ ] HANDS UP. DROP [screaming] THE [ __ ] GUN. DROP THE [ __ ] GUN. DROP THE [ __ ] GUN. A traffic stop turns into gunfire at a Border Patrol trooper, a foot chase through Brownsville backyards, and a 90-minute manhunt that ends with three different agencies firing at once, and agents on their knees afterward, doing everything they can to keep the man they just shot alive. May 13th, 2025, approximately 10:22 in the morning, Central Daylight Time. Fort Brown Border Patrol agents get a request for assistance from Texas DPS. Shots fired near East 23rd Street and Hortensius Street, Brownsville, Texas. Minutes earlier, a DPS trooper had tried to stop a Ford Explorer near Southmost Road and 22nd Street. The driver didn't stop. He fired at the trooper's vehicle, crashed into another car, abandoned the Explorer, and ran on foot into the surrounding neighborhood. By 10:30, Fort Brown agents are on scene, linking up with Brownsville Police. The Rio Grand Valley Sector's Special Operations Detachment arrives shortly after to help set a perimeter. CBP's cameras have been standard for agents since 2021, [music] worn at chest height, and the agency is explicit that the footage doesn't capture everything an agent actually sees, including a 2-minute buffer of silent video [music] recorded automatically before an agent manually activates the audio. What follows is 90 minutes of searching residential blocks for one man. long enough that nearby schools go into lockdown before anyone even knows where he is. >> What do you say about took off on foot? >> He took off on foot. >> They make contact. >> He's found behind a house at 3145 East 23rd Street holding a pistol. Officers order him to drop it, show his hands. According to the official account, he keeps the weapon in hand, ignores the commands, and runs toward the back door of the house, reportedly pointing the pistol at the officers around him as he moves. [music] Texas DPS, Brownsville PD, and Border Patrol agents open fire. According [music] to the arrest affidavit, three officers discharge their weapons. Let me SEE YOUR [ __ ] HANDS. The same people who were just firing are now the ones trying to keep him breathing. >> GOT THAT GUN. HE'S RIGHT BEHIND HIM. >> He's been shot. I need to get him. Hey, give me a minute. >> Hey, he's been shot. I got Hey. >> Hey, put him down. Anybody down here? >> [ __ ] I >> I took >> You took shots. >> I took shot. All right. >> Are you okay? >> All right. Agents are calling out who's where, who fired, trying to build a picture of the scene while someone's life is actively slipping in front of them. >> Fire, bro. >> I was right behind you, bro. >> Okay. Yeah. >> So, >> all good. >> All right. Anyways, we'll be here. So, at my location, that's where I'm at. >> Yeah. Yeah. We shot him and uh he's still alive. I did me and two other >> Okay. >> Yeah. Only pack the chest cavity. >> I mean, not the chest cavity. >> Yeah, I'll wipe that. Oh, >> all right, brother. >> Yep. What's your name? >> Okay. Yeah, right there. Grab one. >> On the arm. Just wrap it. >> Yeah. >> Hold on. Let me cut it. Wrap it. >> Yeah, just breathe normal. All right. >> Breathe normal, dude. >> I want Yeah, >> brother. Just wrap it. We're good. >> Doesn't stretch. So, if he starts to swell, >> someone still has to think about whether anyone else was with him. >> Hey, let him know where he jumped. I don't know if there's another guy back there. So, I saw him. >> They're going right now, >> but he jumped from across the alley this way. So, I don't know if there's more on that side. over here. >> Okay, >> you're going to go to the ambulance coming right now. >> And in the middle of all of it, they're still trying to keep him talking, checking if he's oriented, if he's coherent, if he's still with them. >> I know. The Brownsville Fire Department and EMS take over from there, providing additional care before transporting him to Valley Baptist Hospital, [music] where he's admitted for advanced treatment. Law enforcement sets up hospital watch. He survives. No agents are reported injured. Not the DPS trooper who was shot at during the initial pursuit, and not any of the officers who fired in the final confrontation. CBP's Office of Professional Responsibility, Texas DPS, the FBI, Brownsville Police, and the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General all respond to investigate. Texas DPS leads the investigation. [music] CBP's National Use of Force Review Board is expected to weigh in once that wraps, a determination that in the sources available is never made public. [music] Which specific officer's shot ultimately caused which wound is also never established in any public record reviewed here.
