On March 10th, 2024, deputies with the Grant County Sheriff's Office in Silver City, New Mexico, were called to a property after reports that several people inside a tiny home could barely move, were barely responding, and appeared unable to explain what was happening. Just the night before, a 5-year-old girl had celebrated her birthday. Now, less than 24 hours later, deputies would discover that same little girl unresponsive inside the home. Her seven-year-old brother was also seriously ill, while the adults around them appeared extremely weak, lethargic, and almost unaware of what was happening. But as deputies began trying to understand the scene, they noticed details inside the home that would become critical to the investigation. >> Sheriff's office. >> Yeah. >> What's going on? >> Not much. >> Sorry, I'm really, really stiff this morning. I can't sit upright. >> Are you guys on anything? >> No. >> No. >> No. What? >> No. I'm just really stiff from >> What's wrong with him? >> He's tired. >> Is he awake? >> He is awake. I'm going >> get up. Stand up. >> Stand up. >> I can't. >> Yes, you can. Stand up. >> Get up. Hurry up. >> You need to get up. >> Got it. >> Let's go. Get up. >> I'm getting up. >> Leave her alone. Do not touch her. >> Get up. Go get the other deputies now. >> Should be out here. >> Go get them. >> Let's go. Get up. Hey, >> what is it? >> We got a 10 seven. >> Where? >> Right here. >> Get out. >> Move. Get up. Yes. GET UP NOW. GET OUT. >> GET OUT. I DON'T CARE. STAND UP. >> I'M GOING. >> How long? Give me your hands. >> Where is this going? >> STAND [screaming] UP NOW. >> I'M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU AGAIN. STAND UP. >> STANDING UP. I'M TRYING TO >> Give me Yeah. >> Stand up. I'M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU AGAIN. I'm really trying to stand up. Okay, >> STAND UP. >> I'M TRYING TO STAND UP. I'm trying to stand up. I'm trying to stand up. I'm trying to stand up. Damn it. I got you. I got you, baby. Come on. I got you. I got you, BABY. OH NO. HEY, she's still alive. Hey, start. She's still alive. She's still alive. Come on. Come on. Come on, baby. Come on, baby. Come on, baby. >> Come on. It's in the passenger seat in the ziploc bag. Come on, baby. Knock in. Come on, baby. Come on, baby. Just hit it with our guy. Come on. I don't know. >> It sounded like she was trying to >> go. I don't know. >> Stand up. >> Let's go. >> Where's your shoes at? >> How long? >> Check his vitals. Huh? >> I can't bend it down. >> Your leg hurts. >> Hey, send a 55 for him. >> Let's go. Want me to carry you? Come here. >> Come here. I'll carry you. >> You guys need to get out now. >> Get up. I'm not going to tell you again. >> Get up. [snorts] Okay. What's the matter? What does it hurt? My leg. >> Your leg? >> Mhm. >> Are you okay? >> Mhm. I'm just old. >> How old is your sister? >> Just turned five yesterday. >> She just turned five. >> Mhm. >> Go ahead. Go sit now. >> Right here. [snorts] >> There's two adults. Mom and dad. >> What happened? >> 5-year-old 10 10 seven. >> What happened? >> I don't know. >> He's still alive. Come on. Come here. You okay? Come here. >> It's okay. Back over. We got another one. >> We know what happened. But >> no, we don't know yet. >> Okay. Continue with this. I'm going to go up there and see what else we have. Okay. >> What happened? Sit down. Sit down. >> Sit down. Sit down. I don't know. Put your foot in the door. Wow. >> Did they take the two kids or >> I have both? >> Are they gone? >> One is gone. No one's gone. >> I thought so. I picked her up. I heard something. So I was like possibly. >> Yeah. >> But she felt too she she felt too stuff stiff. That's what I was going to say. >> And the other kid, >> he's doing good. Um, he's got a couple of marks. I don't I wouldn't quite say it was like abuse. >> Mhm. >> He's got a mark here and then a scratch on his back. Um, he said he hasn't eaten since Friday. And I asked him what was going on. He said we are all just cold. So, >> what's going on? >> Why am I being arrested? >> You're not being arrested. You're being detained. >> Why? >> Because you're up here and there's a dead kid. That's why. >> Dead kid. >> Yeah. I wasn't even in the house and I don't care. >> I don't care. >> You're just in investigative detention. Put your hands together like you're praying. >> Huh? >> Here's investigative detention. >> Under arrest. Okay. Put your hands together like you're praying. >> Wait, what did you see? What did you say? Under arrest. >> You're in investigative detention. You're not under arrest. >> Hello. >> Hello. >> What's going on? >> Nothing. I mean, nothing much. >> You said you don't feel good. >> Uh, yeah. >> Okay. As far as I lightheaded. >> Lightheaded? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Do you want your vital taken? >> Oh, be all right. >> Okay. >> What What happened down here? >> Um open. The door was already open. I seen the parents laying down. Son, he didn't look responsive. I didn't see him until I asked him. I said, "What's going on?" I look left. He's just sitting on the chair all lethargic. what's wrong with him? And I saw him moving and breathing. So I was like, okay. So I went to go check on him. I was not responsive. And then she goes, um, the mom goes, I don't think she is. And I looked and they're on top of her. I don't even see him. Like his half of his left body was on her left side. Half of her right body was on her right her other side. So she moved and I looked at the kid and I he was okay. He was breathing. He was moving at least. I looked at her and it was just she was already gone. >> I felt her. I wasn't wearing glo. I I just felt her leg and she was stiff and cold. >> I tried getting the dad. I tried getting up. They couldn't get up. >> I tried to put you dark can someone. >> I tried to but already did before. hit him again >> cuz we were out here. I had the sun. I put on my head and now it comes to running. She said she's still alive. So we can't be right here and then Oh, I don't know what he was feeling, but I don't think she was. >> No, he said she was she's been gone for a while. >> Probably a death battle suffer. >> I'm detective. You could just call me Randy. That's fine. So my job is to figure out what happened today and you are someone that can give me information that I obviously wasn't there for. >> Yeah. >> So I'm playing a little bit of catchup. >> So >> I want to know just as much what happened today. We were all super sick last night and the last thing that we ate was some chocolate cake that I got for my daughter for her birthday party. She had a birthday party at Penny Park from 1 to 4. We left a little bit early because it was getting really cold. >> Mhm. Um, and uh we got before the party, we got uh chocolate cake with white frosting, like rainbow frosting from Albertson's, and that's all that it had on it. And then we got some candles to put on the cake. Five candles to put on the cake. And I still have those candles in the purse, in my purse, I'm assuming. Um, I do smoke weed and speed. Um, but I had not embedded any speed. Okay. So, just to be clear with speed, >> nothing fun. >> Thank you. I appreciate it. >> I do not use them regularly. It was just kind of like I wanted I wasn't feeling good. It doesn't matter. It's that's all just excuses. >> But anyways, I had not used any past like noon. No 30 at the very latest was the last time that I used yesterday. >> Okay. >> Yes. >> Um right before heading out to her party. >> Okay. Um, and there was nothing. There was no there was nothing that she could get in the room. The room is extremely messy and that is true. And we're working on it. We don't have a vehicle right now to even take it to the dump. So, it's really really >> hard. It is hard. And uh we had a friend that was letting us use their drug >> um to do dump runs and stuff. >> Okay. I'm sorry. I >> to do dump runs and stuff. And uh yeah, I've done not recently, but like recently I've just done Weed and Speed. And I've done a lot of drugs throughout my life, though. My name is Music. My parents named me music. You know, that's the life I grew up in. But um I've never felt like I did last night. It was unreal. Like I couldn't hold myself up. My do my daughter and my son couldn't hold themselves up. I had no idea what was going on and I just wanted us to get some sleep and I thought that that would help and I don't know I don't know what it was but that's why I really really really want to see the blood work and stuff because that was not like anything I've ever experienced. >> Me too. It's it's extremely weird, right? >> Yes. >> Just like that stuff like that doesn't really happen. Well, it happened last night and I don't know how it happened and I don't know if the I don't I don't have any idea what happened, but I want to know what was in my system and I want to know how it got to my kids system because they did not get in. They I'm telling you and an investigation will have to be done and that is fine with me. But I know that I do not do fentinol or heroin. I know that. And so if that's in my system and if that's in my little girl's system, somebody [ __ ] put it there. Sorry, excuse my language, but I >> You can speak however you want. You're going through some [ __ ] right now. Straight up. >> No, I want to speak eloquently because I don't want to to >> be misconstrued. >> I don't want to be misconstrued. I know that a lot of people come through here lying about what they do, and I am not here to lie about what I do. I'm here to figure out what happened to my children because I I care. They are the best thing that ever happened to me [clears throat] and I'm not the best thing to ever happen to them. >> No, that's big. That's a [clears throat] really big thing to see. >> But I just want to know they're okay. Um, so >> and I want the opportunity to become the best thing for them and show them how much I care about them. It's just [laughter] what I was trying to do yesterday. And when we got to the party, there was some other bigger birthday party going on. And it's just really hard. It's hard not having a car and living all the way out there and just trying to desperately get my kids to school on time every day, man. >> Okay, so you guys had a party at Penn from 10 to 4 yesterday. >> Yes. And it wasn't a party with alcohol or anything. It was just my little girl's first escape party. That's all it was. We had cake. We didn't have ice cream cuz it melted. But we had cake and we had some chips, Doritos, and Ruffles. And her best friend Henry came and his grandma Irene brew her. And my mom was there and my aunt Melissa was there and her husband Zach. >> It sounds like everything any kid would want. >> They don't care about all the pathy stuff anyway. >> They just want to have a good time. >> Yeah. >> So that happens. You guys have some cake and then later on it it starts getting cold. So we headed we headed home and then Zachie wanted to know if she could have one more slice of cake be and I said sure. And we all had a slice of cake before bed. And that's when things just started to get weird. I don't know if it was like I've never had a sugar high like that. Like I don't know what happened. I don't think it was the cake or anything. I don't know what it was. >> What about the heater for the house? >> The heater? We don't have the propane hooked in. We were out of propane >> and the coals. Like the place where you had the coals or whatever you were burning in there. >> Yeah, it was coals. They were coals. Um but we burn them all the way to coals so they don't smoke the place out. And then we vent the window. Normally we have a propane heater and when we have the propane hooked up to the heater that's up against the wall. >> Um we still leave it vented because we the kids were a while back like when we first moved in. This is over a year ago. >> My son was waking up throwing up. Um and we discovered it's because we had all the windows shut with the propane heater on. So it wasn't ventilating properly. So we started leaving the windows just cracked and that was enough and all the throwing up stuff. So that was good. >> Yeah, that was my initial thought with everyone in the house. >> Like you guys, from what we were told at the time, like people just aren't feeling good and having that type of heater inside the house or or even burning the coals inside, you get a little carbon monoxide. >> Uh certain percent, I'm not doctor, some percent you're going to start feeling sick and whatnot. And after that, things get a little bit more serious. >> Yeah. >> Right. Progressively more serious until that's solved. >> The kids were fine. The kids were fine all the way up until we I woke up in the middle of the night because Zachi was crying and Zy was crying and they appeared to be asleep. Like they were having night terrors, but like severe night tears, but they were fine when they laid down to snuggle with me. After we had the cake, everybody was fine. My son put on some YouTube and everything seemed fine and I crashed out. And then I woke up to my kids. Uh they were crying and Zach was kind >> about what time was that? Do you know? >> Uh I I don't have any idea, but my husband might know. My husband might know because he came out of the fifth wheel over to the tiny home um to see what was going on, to see why everybody was crying and to lay down with us. And uh he said he was feeling really crappy and he was trying to get my son to calm down and I had Zaki trying to calm her down or like maybe wake her up so that she was not, you know, I wasn't like uh I was just being gentle like rubbing her forehead and stuff, you know, like just trying to get her to wake up or cuz she was crying. She was alive, you know, she was crying and we just couldn't figure out what it was that that was making them cry. And my son was curled up in a little ball and we had no idea what was going on. But eventually they calmed, they quieted down and there was just like a little whimper every now and again, but they were okay. They were breathing. they were responsive somewhat, you know, like there were vital signs, you know, and uh in hindsight, I should have just called I should have called right then. I should have called somebody right then when all of that was going on. I don't know, maybe 10 minutes and then my son calms down first and just started breathing a little bit heavily and was and then just calm down. Um, and then my daughter would whimper every now and again um and like shiver kind of uh and I just pulled her in close to me to like try and warm her up. Last night uh when I woke up, she was in between me and my husband. She was in between us. Like you could see her face. You could see her whole body, you know. And uh it was tripping me out and I kept trying to sit up, but I couldn't. I could not sit up like for the same reason I can't. I don't know if you can see this hand right now, but it's super swollen. And I don't have any idea what's going on with it, but it is in a lot of pain. But I was trying so hard to to sit up. I even told my husband, I was like, "Push me up. I need to check on Zachie. Like something's not right. Um and I just couldn't sit up and I saw her right there and I just couldn't sit up. I couldn't even sit up to get to the phone. Like >> what what made you know that something was wrong? Was it something different than the like the shivering whimpering or was there something else? >> She was just very She was very still. >> Okay. >> It was just different. Um >> there something wasn't right. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So then that leads into So what happens after that? I just kept trying to sit up. I started and I started screaming for help because I couldn't get up. I could not get up. I could not sit up. Even when the cops came in, they were telling me, "Get up. Get up." And I was like, "I'm trying to get up. Like, believe me, I want to get up right now." Like, I couldn't get up. I couldn't get up. This side of me, it was like something was stabbing me down or something. I >> did Thaddius ever come to help you? Um, Thaddius did eventually come to the door and he was like, "Is everything all right?" And I was like, "I don't know. I Zach is acting funny and I can't sit up right now and I'm not feeling good. I don't know what's going on right now." And so presumably that's what he called. >> Okay. And then that's where we got involved. Okay. All right. So, thank you. That I know that's kind of a a lot to go through. >> Okay. Um, Zy, right? Is that your son's name? Zy. Um I I checked on him at the hospital when when I saw you. Um so from what they're thinking at at that time things could have changed. Um he looks like he has a touch of pneumonia. >> Okay. >> Okay. But I mean otherwise he seemed pretty pretty okay. They're treating them. They're going to do what doctors do. >> Yeah. >> Right. And check him for all sorts of stuff. Um Zachie, she didn't survive. What did they say happened? >> We don't know. We have no idea. >> Are they going to do a toxicology on her? >> We are going the full 9 yards to figure out what it was that happened. >> Please do. >> So that's why I wanted to talk to you and daddies to figure out like cuz this stuff doesn't really happen, right? >> No. >> So I'm so sorry to be the one to have to tell you that. You shouldn't have to hear this from someone that you don't even know. >> But she hit it. But we are going to look into it as deeply as we possibly can to try to get a better answer for what happened. Parent to parent. I hate that I'm going to ask you this question, but I have to ask out of respect to your daughter. >> Yes. >> Did you know she was dead? >> I didn't know. I wasn't sure, but I did feel like something wasn't right. And so that's when I started calling out cuz I asked was just calling out for help. I did not know. I just knew something wasn't right. >> Cuz I mean, sometimes things happen, right? But that's why we got to look at everything. We got to look at this whole picture. >> Please look at everything. Please look at everything because I >> Please look at everything >> 100%. Like I said, I'm not the kind of cop that's I'm here to catch anybody up. That's not what this is, okay? What this is is a matter of trying to figure out what happened because right now it's a mystery. Nobody knows. No one knows what happened. I did try to talk to your husband. He refused to make a statement to me. So, I couldn't speak to him about it to get more information. >> Does he know? >> Yeah, he knows. I told him. Um I was under the the impression that he knew when I talked to him. Uh he wasn't aware. Uh apparently he wasn't aware. So, um, that's one of the reasons why I wanted to bring you here to have that conversation because it's no one own everyone over there. It's none of their business. And I didn't want you to have to endure that and have some nurse come in and check your blood pressure while you're going through something. But we are going to look at it at every angle we possibly can. Okay? So, I have to look at it a lot of different ways. Obviously, I got to look at it in the role of a cop, right? Gathering evidence, blah blah blah blah blah. I just want just I just [clears throat] want to know what happened. >> I want to know what happened. >> And then we have we'll have a team of medical professionals that are going to examine uh your daughter and do everything that they can possibly do to figure out what it was that happened to her that caused this to happen. And then once we know that, then we'll have an answer. But right now, we just don't know. And because of the nature of not knowing, we have to go do this in a very particular way. >> Yeah. >> So, as the sheriff's office, this isn't just unique to you guys, but every death that we have, whether it's the old man dying in bed, um car accident, stuff like that, every death we have, we investigate it as a homicide until proven otherwise, which is one of the reasons that you guys are placing. We got something really, really serious going on and we need to figure out what that is. Right. >> Absolutely. So, I will give you my word that I'm going to do my best to find out what happened to your dog. >> By the time investigators put the pieces together, the outcome was devastating. 5-year-old Zachene Binham had died from carbon monoxide poisoning after investigators determined that hot coals had been burned inside the tiny home because the family did not have a reliable source of heat. Her 7-year-old brother survived, but he was hospitalized with dehydration and pneumonia, and testing also showed exposure to methamphetamine. The investigation also uncovered a history of concerns involving the family, including reports about unsafe living conditions, neglect, school absences, drug use, and possible abuse. Authorities had received multiple reports before Zachalene's death and the case eventually came under intense scrutiny. Music Adam was charged with intentional abuse of a child resulting in death, abandonment of a child resulting in death or great bodily harm and abuse of a child. The child's father, Matthew Binham, also faces charges related to Zachene's death. The charges are allegations and the case remains pending. But one question still remains. How did multiple warning signs involving these children go unnoticed for so long? And could this tragedy have been prevented? What do you think after seeing the body cam footage and hearing what investigators discovered? If you want more real body cam cases with the full story, investigation, evidence, and breakdown, body cam casebook and turn on the notification bell. More cases are
