She had just celebrated her fifth birthday. Less than 24 hours later, deputies were called to a tiny home in Silver City, New Mexico. On March 10, 2024, deputies with the Grant County Sheriff's Office responded to a property on Quail Run Road after receiving a report of an unresponsive child. Inside the tiny home, deputies encountered a disturbing scene. A 5-year-old girl, Xaqueline Bynum, was found unresponsive and could not be revived despite deputies attempting lifesaving measures. Her 7-year-old brother was also inside and was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for dehydration and pneumonia. According to investigators, the home had extremely poor living conditions and lacked a reliable source of heat. The children's mother later told investigators that the family had been bringing hot coals inside the home to keep warm. Toxicology and autopsy findings later determined that Xaqueline died from carbon monoxide poisoning. The surviving child's toxicology test also showed methamphetamine exposure. The investigation eventually led to the arrests of the children's parents, Music Adame and Matthew Bynum. Adame faces charges including intentional abuse of a child resulting in death, abandonment of a child resulting in death or great bodily harm, and child abuse, including a charge related to the alleged methamphetamine exposure of her surviving son. Matthew Bynum faces charges including intentional abuse of a child resulting in death and abandonment of a child resulting in death or great bodily harm. The case has continued through the courts. As of January 2026, Adame's trial was scheduled for May 2026, while Bynum's trial was scheduled for March 2026.
