What's that? My Uber's on its way. Oh, your Uber's on its way. Yeah. Gotcha. No reason. Talk to me about uh but you know. Yeah. So, you were trying to drive home though? Yeah. Got you. So, talk to me about what happened today, though, just recently. Nothing. I did my friends to get something to eat. Around 7:15 p.m. on August 22nd, 2024, Officer Matthew D. Veroni and Sergeant Scott Tobin with the Danville Township Police Department responded to 559 East Main Street on a report of a shoplifter attempting to drive away from Dollar Tree. Upon arrival, the officers were flagged down by an employee who told them that he was no longer concerned about the stolen items because they were able to secure the items before she left the store. But he was concerned that the woman who had attempted to steal may be impaired. The officers made contact with the female suspect who was identified as Rebecca Sullivan. Rebecca denied being under the influence, but she was asked to perform field sobriety exercises since she was exhibiting indicators of impairment. You know what happened and um yeah, everyone has to do something. And then you went to the Dollar Tree. Yeah. Talk to me about the Dollar Tree. I really just I I lost my um And then yeah, he was just logging out since the second I got there. And he told me to go where? Oh, somewhere over there. And yeah, when you got there, something happened and then he took me back here and I said, "Okay, well, I have an Uber coming to get me cuz he says that I can't drive my car." Who's he? That guy, the employee has no range over it. Gotcha. And I said, "What are you talking about? I live literally 6 minutes from here." So, but you got in the car and you were trying to drive away and he stopped you. Yeah. Okay. And so I stopped and I did exactly what he wanted me to do. Yeah. All right. So you had $10 inside of the Dollar Tree. What was it that you were trying to buy? Um some granola. Um, how did you get here? Um, I drove because you drove here? Yeah. Okay. didn't do anything. So, ma'am, just so you didn't you didn't take or ingest anything or drink anything while you were here? No. Okay. This is your car, Rebecca? Yes. I'm going to take your purse. No, this this is actually my father's. Okay. But you one that you drove. Yes, because mine my air conditioning is fixed. Rebecca, let me take your purse from you. I'm going to put it on the hood. Okay. Why? We'll be out of here. Okay. You can finish that cigarette and then just put it out on the ground. Why don't we uh do it on somewhat of a level slope here? This is a little uh Yeah. Elevated. Little elevated part. Okay. Over here. Over here. It's level. Going that way. All right. Okay. Rebecca, can make sure it's level for her. I'll take the water. Okay. Now, just so you know, right, we're running through what's called SFST, standardized fuel soiety tests. The reason being is that the caller reported that you seem to be under the influence of something. When I got here, you sounded a little bit um we got some slur speech, so I just need to make sure that you are good to drive. All right. Once if you pass these if you pass these tests, then you're you're good to go. Okay. But like, how is his saying? I could call someone. Okay. I think someone's walking funny, right? And if they're going to drive, we're going to go up there and we're going to test them based on our observations. Um, hey, what's up, John? How are you? Good. How are you? All right. So, we're going to imagine that there's a line from between here and this line behind you. And I'm going to place you in the starting position for the walk and turn. The starting position is first of all, actually, do you have any like impediments uh that would The first field sobriety was the walk and turn test. During the walk and turn test, Rebecca failed to touch heel to toe on each step, took an incorrect number of steps, and failed to turn. The second exercise was the one leg stand test and Rebecca failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion while putting her foot down before the test was complete. The final exercise was the Romberg test and Rebecca estimated the passage of 25 seconds over 40 to seconds. Yeah, you can take your shoes off if you want to. All right. Now, for this test, it's going to be your left foot on the line. We can use this right here. We can use this. Oh, all right. We're going to change positions. We can make it very easy for this young lady here. Okay. So, now we have a real line. Okay. All right. So, nothing to impede you from doing a simple balance test on the line with your right foot in front and your arms down at your side. Don't move from this position until I tell you to do so. So, I'm going to explain the test from here. Okay, remain in that position until I tell you to start the test. From this position, you're going to take nine heel to toe steps up the line, counting loud each time. Once you get to nine nine steps, you're going to turn around, taking a series of small steps, and take nine steps back down the line. Once you get to nine steps, you're done with the test. Okay, now I'm going to demonstrate for you. I'm going to take three steps. You're going to do nine. All right. One, two, three. Simulating this is number nine. You're going to turn around taking a series of small steps. Yeah. Heel to toe. All right. And then one, two, three, heel to toe. So on and so forth. It's a nine steps back down the line. I I have sneakers in the car. You have sneakers in the car? I'll go. If you give us the key, I'll go get them for Just hang here. I want Well, you want to take your shoes off? I don't know. Whatever you feel comfortable doing. We'll make sure you're okay here. Make sure there's no debris on here or anything. I don't know why you hurt yourself. So, if you want the shoes, we'll do whatever you want. Okay. Are you okay like this? Yeah. All right. Do you understand the test? Yeah. Many people have had it before and I've always done it and I can never So you've done the test before? Not not with a cop. Oh, just like Yeah. My friends have showed me what they got. Yeah. Gotcha. All right. Begin the test and don't stop until you're done. H. Mhm. 18. Confirm. Okay. How many time How many steps did he tell you to make you go? 20. He told you to take 20. 10. Or was it nine? I think it was nine. Oh, nine. Yeah, it was. I think the whole time. Yeah. All right. So, we we'll go back here. You guys remember me? I figured I should have just I was just walking with you. Oh, okay. Yeah. No, it was nine steps. All right. Um, this next test is going to be what's called the one leg stand. For the one leg stand, the starting position is your feet together, toes touching toes, heels touching heels, arms down at your side. When I say to do so, you're going to raise either foot of your choice approximately six inches above the ground with your toe pointed outwards, looking at your toe, counting loud. 100,00 1,002 100,00 so on and so forth till I tell you to stop. Do you understand? Exactly. Watch my demonstration. 1001,002 100,005 and so on. Do you understand? Yeah. Okay. Yep. Keep your foot up six approximately six inches off the ground with your arms down at your side. Ma'am, do we need to move it off? You may begin when you're ready to do so. And don't stop until you're done. Until I tell you. You can look the tip of your toe. Keep going. Yeah. Until I tell you to stop. Your toe. Tip your toe, ma'am. 11. All right, this third test, you can stop your test. Uh, we're going to start another one. It's called the Romberg test. All right, for the Romberg test, same starting position. Your feet together, toes touching toes, heels touching heels, your arms down at your side. When I say to do so, you're going to tilt your head back at a 45 degree angle and close your eyes. Inside your mind, you're going to count to 30 seconds. All right, watch my demonstration. I'm not going to close my eyes, but you will. All right, counting in your mind to 30 seconds. Do you understand? Yes. Okay, you may begin. Think we're just going to go for a second. We're okay. You get the concept of this now. Yeah. Yeah. We'll end it. That was Would you say 25? Yes. Okay. So, I told you to count to 30. I didn't say stop. Yeah. You were It looked like you were falling asleep there. So, I just want to make sure that you're going to be okay. Okay, you can put your shoes back on. You want a hook or what do you want to do? What? Yeah. Can we get a hook? Put your shoes back on. Walk over to your car for me. So, and then what you're going to do is you're going to lock her up and then you're going to while you're doing that. Okay. Okay. All right. Recca, I understand. Put your hands on your car right here. What's the problem, ma'am? Rebecca, I I Put your hands behind your back. Based on the witness account indicating she was likely impaired, her admission to driving, and her inability to satisfactorily complete the field sobriety exercises. Officer Chvarron placed Rebecca under arrest for driving under the influence. Her vehicle was impounded for a 12-hour hold according to J's law since Danville's alco test machine was not operational. Officer to Veroni transported Rebecca to the Pipony Police Department for further processing. Don't do anything else. I don't understand. I Put your hands behind your back. Don't do anything else. Walk out the door. Okay. But you drove? Yes. And you clearly under influence of something. But I'm not. Well, I believe you are. And so does those walking test. Which one?
