runny noses 10 rtcs eight conjulations seven chest infections 6 p.m break time five fractured legs four patients painting three rectal bleed two people fighting and a patient with a poorly knee foreign [Music] this is the story of Christmas day with the West Midlands Ambulance Service as it happened Merry Christmas Happy Christmas a gift from me to you that's very kind of my crew made very crew Adam hit kiss and Richard Price are working the overnight shift [Music] we are 12 minutes into Christmas Day [Applause] Adam and Richard's first Christmas call has come in [Music] four five two three over oh thank you we find at least like he's got a DNA are inside I have the baby's update because I'm running another crew procedure update as soon as we can ever cool is to sit [Music] the Nar a do not attempt resuscitation order in place nothing to harm Christmas Day thank you hello you're right sorry my darling oh thank you where are we going bro diagnosed with cancer just two months ago Cheryl had been celebrating an early Christmas with her family including her three children sister grandchildren and husband straight away Adam and Richard check for vital signs but the family and the paramedics know that sadly there's nothing to be done you really feel for the family going through that especially being Christmas Day when it happens and we're confirming their their worst fears it's going to be going to be heartbreaking for them you could really feel that when when you walked in they were all devastated so the wrong time of year for it to happen as well it's I think it's because it's such a shock because it's like yeah at least you were all here with the winner when it happened okay okay thank you very much sir thank you bye in that moment all we can do is be there for the family there are certain things that have to happen after a death so we're there just to offer support with it any way we can and sometimes I only have questions about what's happened and we can give a try and give his full announcer as we can so that they understand what's happened to the to their loved one he sure there's no no questions you want us to answer okay like I said if you think of any on the outside okay so on the left side from house discharge papers the crew can see that he suffers from angina and had a heart attack 22 years ago does it feel like it did last time when you had your heart attack so is this the first time that you've had the chest pain since you came out of Hospital yes yes it is it is [Music] oh Becky's just gonna pop some more do you just all right just so we can have a closer look at your heart and then we'll take everything from there all right [Music] Alf everything we've done at the minute is fine okay where we stand at the moment no our Fizzies because we can only do so much here the definitive to work out whether or not it was anything with your heart would be a blood test and that can only be done in hospital in a e it's potentially just it's the angina but it can't say for 100 sure that you've not had another heart attack after suffer with angina um which the symptoms can be very similar if those of a heart attack given that he had had a heart attack in the past it was very difficult to determine whether or not he was having another one Ali's ECG was fine but he needed to go to hospital for further tests all right you all right Saturday since the only one that is Christmas song has to be the probes yeah the Christmas when you're here um mid-afternoon their next emergency comes in a nine-month-old baby with a worryingly high temperature [Music] it takes just minutes to arrive mum Kaylee is waiting outside are we a few not for you but see you soon hello it's what's been going on then what do you woke up this morning he's done nothing but winch if you've been down he's not interested in any of his toys that's just completely out of the blue for him it's not him and he temperatures slowly been creeping up and I've noticed anything with his breathing or anything he has been quite busy he had an inhaler for just over a week because he had a bad problem and then he was fine but this morning has been slightly lazy okay 45.5 oh dear you're a bit warm mommy yeah so Louis Sim was one hot little lad he had a temperature over 40 which is extremely high for a child it was he just a simple infection I was there's something else going on nearly yet then didn't yeah I know I'm sorry everybody can I listen to his back as well mum is that okay that's what happened that's all that happens every time just cries sorry lovely you're not noticed him having a cough or anything [Music] there could be a number of causes for Lewis ecky needs to check his sugar levels with a drop of blood [Music] sorry Bob okay right [Music] we took that well to be fairly close we have adults that mind more than that after all the routine tests the cause of baby Lewis's temperature is still unclear I think there's not an awful lot that we can do you've pretty much done everything and the only thing we can do is leave him up to hospital for you what would you suggest I'd say with a temperature of 40 to take him to hospital no one wants to spend their first Christmas in hospital with Lewis's skyrocketing temperature we didn't know if it was um a leftover from the previous infection or a continuation of that or whether it was something more Sinister and new so I threw all that out we thought it was best about Hospital can I have his foot is that all right can I be a pain as well can I take his top off him he's like all right while he's in it yeah just to try and get him a little bit cooler mom if we can um I am happy when you are [Music] here's your Christmas dinner then were you staying in for it yeah just after three when most people are tucking into their Christmas turkey they arrive at hospital the right people you're all right carry him in that yeah you sure you're all right yeah I'm fine thank you here doctors can get Lewis's temperature under control watch that mom [Music] he's inevitable little choppy onesie himself if you think of it neither away well I wouldn't say irritable we're irritable aren't we and still talk and walk around as such but a baby can't [Music] [Music] oh yeah he's slamming I'm loving it foreign [Music] it's Christmas evening and Adam is on the overnight 55 year old female it's falling with a knee injury [Music] the injured woman Cheryl was celebrating at home with Friends when the accident happened Cheryl had the accident after she'd cooked Christmas dinner when she went to stand up she felt something pop hello why what's been going on Lovely okay it's Christmas add a Tipple that's fine yeah yeah okay can I have a look at your knee is that all right sorry my darling I know it's painful I've got to have a feel just seem a little bit more swollen there yeah yeah oh okay darling Oh God sorry my lovely how bad is that pain at the minute on the scale of zero out of ten Ten's like nine yeah I think about a disco and then pop back in maybe it will be a trip to the hospital though I'm afraid sweetheart just relax honestly you're fine it's okay just chill you know hit me just relax I'm gonna go get some gas in there and I'll get you a splint I'm gonna have a look at getting out of here but it's gonna be a nightmare oh yeah I know you'll probably end up being another queen too well it's gonna be a strike in it before of us because those metal cells are lethal thank you four five two three thank you update from sea um patient has had a mechanical for his query dislocated her knee and it's gone back into place we're gonna need to vacuum spin it and this flat is above a shop and to get her out she's gonna have to come down about 10 metal stairs in the dark and would we be able to have a second crew just to assist together out because she's gonna have to go out on a chair with a vacuum cemented leg I'm not overly comfortable carrying down the stairs just me and Adam in the wet in the dark over the service is even busier than usual today so they need to call the special hazardous area response team or heart these are dedicated paramedics trained in dangerous environments already darling Christmas Day it happens don't worry there you go just minutes later The Specialist heart team arrives some people to help us it's just to help us get downstairs down those stairs that's always um I've managed obviously as you can see I've been able to get the truck up so we've got a bit of light it's just they're rotten because they're wet that's all but before the two Crews can get Cheryl onto the ambulance her knee has to be strapped onto a splint to protect it from further injury during the move [Music] you're doing really really well wonderful darling put your weight on this leg nothing on that leg even with the four of us it was quite difficult getting Cheryl out of the flat and because her leg was in the vacuum splint it's straight so you then kind of have to leave someone to look after the leg and it leaves you three people to use the chair and it was very dark very cold and the stairs are very slippy right I didn't mind your back here I can hold the leg from back here if you're able to get there you got that no I know I ain't ideal but it's the middle one okay I'm over the edge mate there we go drop three blonde Christmas Day all right careful as you come down because you can have one you've got one more step in yeah got another step in instead [Music] at last the crew can get Cheryl yeah just to let you know mate we've just knocked on the door there's no one answering um and if you want to give him a call back just to see whether they're still there or whether they've got themselves on the ball after a few minutes all right mate the patient Max the Latvia National has woken from his sleep and appears at the ambulance mate I was already like going to bed you should Escape let me just wipe it off um Anyway said happy Christmas yeah Merry Christmas Merry Christmas mate what can we do if you mate um just check my shoulder please because uh my girlfriend I'm parting and dancing and I kind of fell okay and as soon as I move my shoulder it just feels like I can't breathe okay any pain in your knuckle back at all can I just have a little feel just keep your head still any pain here yeah yeah sorry just try to just try to relax it's the pain in your neck or your backer is it over to the side oh you swung back when we first examined Max became quite apparent that it might have been perhaps more than a shoulder injury as he was complaining with neck and back pain and I was really quite concerned about that because of the implications that can have he could have potentially damaged his spine and as a result of that we chose to immobilize him we need to keep him as still as straight as possible to minimize damage now my friend's just going to come and hold your head for a second because this is really important this is really important we establish whether it's your neck or it's your back that's painful as well as the shoulder [Music] okay that hurts painful that hurts okay we're gonna need to go to the hospital okay I can't tell you for certain whether you've damaged your shoulder or your back okay so it might be you've injured your back as well as your shoulder okay because it's really really I know it's uncomfortable right this board it's not going to be comfortable okay it looks like yeah it's not quite a four poster bed all right Orthopedic team we've always bless him he had some good Fanta got a bit of pain and develop selfies I hate having myself I'm not the most about today bang on Insta hashtag Christmas ambulance crew it's after Cheryl's family spent some last Precious Moments with her The Undertakers arrived her funeral was held after Christmas after blood tests ruled out a heart attack 92 year old Alf was discharged from hospital and he was able to enjoy the rest of Christmas Day at home Lewis was quickly seen by doctors and diagnosed with a viral infection he and Mum Kaylee were home in time to enjoy Christmas evening as a family [Music] Cheryl's injuries turned out to be even more serious than first thought she had shattered her pelvis and broken her hip after five days in hospital she was discharged in time to see in the new year at home [Music] Max made a full recovery from his painful shoulder nothing was broken and he's kept his Ed Sheeran selfies as a souvenir of his first ever Christmas inside an ambulance [Music] wow that is annoying Christmas day our shift is gone it was a good night let's be honest didn't get pooed on Happy Days smashed it mate [Music]
