good end and more cameras that Tyler is a little camera we're taking you back to the heart of the action just lie down for me we're from the ambulance okay there are some new faces I'm happy to are you crewmate I feel that we've bonded and some old friends I'm bad driving yeah is it the fact that I'm faster and smoother than you you're driving's terrible how can I help body mounted cameras record every moment nice deep breaths going to open up smashing to show you what goes on behind closed doors we'll get you right all right you'll be on the front line with the ambulance cruise from West Midlands Ambulance Service I don't need to be a doctor I just need to know what I can do to help as they deal with 3 000 emergency calls each day we see so many people who get told that nasty c word there's so many people can fight it now step inside the ambulance you take care mate all right thank you thank you [Music] have you got any plans for New Year and the resolutions [Music] not get fatter [Laughter] nine I want to burn calories in the new year I know it's everybody's New Year's resolution but I'm actually going to be string gentlemen do you gym it or do you not Jimmy do you just like go running I'm too old for Jim now too old for the gym yeah you're never too old for the gym too fat for the gym then get stuffed how else do you think you get skinny boy running you're not too fast to run though you do could you give it about so you're never going to start running then yeah yeah you just wear the corset room a corset of course [Music] [Music] it's New Year's Eve one of the busiest times for the West Midlands Ambulance Service crewmates Stu Ayers and Rob Bates are planning their evening [Music] nice rock and roll cup of tea in an early bed Two Sugars not one cause I'm off mid we live The Rock and Roll Lifestyle don't you their last job of the year is to help a 70 year old man who's struggling to breathe his worried wife Anne has called 999. hello hey buddy come to see yourself have we so Dave what's been going on there [Music] all your chest anyways if you sit up a little bit more buddy or not oh is it hurting to move is it yeah I've been worried about him do you want to tell us so we can get his breath yeah he can't breathe yeah he's sleeping olive oil okay right okay okay okay I'm just gonna pop these stickers on the inside your wrists David could I have a little listen to your chest is that all right how long have you had this blood clot on your lung Florida David had blood thinning injections as soon as the clot was discovered but now he's struggling to breathe the crew had concerned his condition has become critical can I just shine a torch at you I'm sorry to shut your eyes if you need to yeah you've got no collar to your cheeks at all have you no okay David again what we need to do we're going to lift your T-shirt up you're right everybody what's the matter hey what's wrong don't worry we're gonna sort you out okay listen we need to just see what's going on with you first don't we properly so this is why we're doing all these checks okay and once we know we can get you sorted we'll take you to a hospital and get you treated late all right have you got any pain anywhere at all about NHS point where I've just pointed and does that pain go anywhere else as much as you can what we're trying to do is get here a look at your heart electronically looking at his initial ECG and he had some ECG changes which could indicate a heart attack and we were quite worried about David um we wanted to get into hospital as soon as possible [Music] trying to slow your breathing going a bit all right if you're fine we'll have to ask you okay yes yeah a lot yes another ECG confirms that David is showing all the classic symptoms of a heart attack so stew needs to alert the hospital to prepare for his arrival I'm going to call City a e just to let them know okay okay he is symptomatic he's had chest pain most of the day he's been quite pale and clammy okay that's perfect thank you so let me just explain what we think might be going on the potential is there's some changes to your ECG okay which may indicate that you might be having a bit of a heart attack [Music] they have to get him to hospital as quickly as they can leaving his wife Anne who's housebound at home some big stickers onto you the monitor your heart better because these ones are coming off because you're sweaty aren't you okay [Music] thank you [Music] head forward [Music] how you feeling okay all right okay [Music] that was quick David will very quickly be seen by the Cardiology team [Music] I think she's in the right place and we've blue lighted him into not their space of care the doctor can see him straight away yeah it is a shame isn't it because uh he will be yeah they'll be seeing in 2018 in accident and emergency blessing which actually gets moved on by then well hopefully yeah he's got a few hours hasn't he but he's certainly been hospital it's not the best way to see it [Music] ambulance crew Gaz Clark and Liam Dale are working right through into the new year [Music] foreign they've been called to a 23 year old man whose New Year celebrations have been dramatically cut short 23 in jury fireworks [Music] bleeding from F fireworks it's him in the back of the head [Music] would be nice to this [Music] I've never really thought like fireworks at home we're very sick [Music] already on the scene is a community first responder evening folks who's given emergency first aid while waiting for the paramedics to arrive so this is Bradley yeah Bradley's been uh lighting a firework being hit in the face it burns the back of his head burn to his neck he's a little bit of debris in his eyes Bradley's New Year celebrations went horribly wrong when a lit Firework misfired and stuck in his hood yeah I'll have a look here I know although Bradley's burns are extremely painful Gaz is more concerned about potential damage to his eyes so we're always playing up at the moment left I can say it my right there's still something left playing corn on the right right okay then we head back a bit we head back oh my I open yeah yeah you'll have to tilt your head tilt your head to that side that's it keep your eye opener fine keep your eye open yeah because this is salt water if you cry your tears are actually salt water right now we'll do the other eye as well to make sure so tilt your head over to the right right we'll do the same again to make sure that your eyes are clear out yeah yeah okay making lean forward and let it dry in a sec we're going to change the dressing on the back of your neck yeah so that's what I need because that's getting hot oh as gas moves Bradley into the light of the kitchen it reveals deep tissue Burns to his neck this definitely looks up by someone yeah yeah the crew need to keep reapplying the cooling dressing to prevent the burns getting any worse [Music] kitchen roll yeah don't rub Daddy Bradley was in a lot of pain and he had severe burns to his neck the concerning factor for us was his loss of vision although we've done initial treatments on scene we needed a game in the back of the ambulance right keep looking at me keep looking all right keep looking I know I just want to make sure I just want to make sure I think it's my oil actually burn and that's welcome but I just want to make sure there's nothing else going on you see normally we concentrate on one particular thing I know it hurts on the back of your neck but we need to look at everything else as well burn on the back of your neck he's gonna even if you had to skin graft so what oh he's we've only got two of yeah we need to keep them [Music] um so you've got a few little specks on your face there yeah it has swelled up your left cheek but that's because of the the Heat and the impact yeah you slap somebody around the face it's gonna swell up not a concern you can see and that's the main thing it looks like you've been eating the battery in the face with a baseball bat no look at the good thing your cheeks are all swollen up and it's took all the wrinkles out in the mirror man yeah at the hospital Bradley can have further investigation of his eyes and doctors will determine if he needs specialist treatment for his Burns [Music] first firework injury I've seen second firework injury I've been to but the other one was on bonfire night don't really see many Burns to be honest the most Burns I see are young kids and usually transfers from One hospital to Children's or something or you know but actually going out responding on a triple nine normally it's gold yeah it's very rare I've never opened the burns pack that's the first time I've opened it how is it it's quite lucky really hasn't like lost an eye maybe he hasn't lost tonight you know it could have been a lot worse [Music] [Music] I'd rather work New Year's Eve to be fair it's a fun shift to do if you're working can be on nights yeah on nights it's a fun shift you get a bit of free food if you come in for the sandwich and the Apple yeah because I am anyone's [Music] ambulance crewmates Hannah Meredith and Aaron Campbell are nearing the end of their shift when the latest emergency call comes through two three please thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] in three minutes the crew arrive at the home of pensioner Tony his wife Sheila called for help after her husband had been vomiting since the early hours of the morning hello there my name's Hannah and this is Aaron what's been going on this evening [Music] that's nothing to what he has been fetching up although it was proper very dark almost black and this is what keeps happening okay what started at five o'clock this morning with it and he settled down and had to sleep in the five o'clock he had a chicken drum Chief Two sprouts and a small scoop of mashed potato okay what's your name sweetie what do you like to be called it's Charlie it's all right you can't talk he's had three Strokes can you understand what we're saying and everything though yeah cool as well as suffering multiple Strokes Tony has other conditions for which he takes a variety of different medicines pop this on your finger and it's his recently prescribed arthritis medication that could be causing the vomiting we're just gonna pop this in your arm as well I wonder if an approxen's done it oh my guess is nasty on your stomach yeah I'm guessing it's probably that to be fair when do they have an approxen today what time lunchtime so Tony had had some recent medication changes due to his arthritis and this medication quite often um causes problems in the stomach and it was quite hard as well because Tony couldn't um communicate with us and it's quite important to try and keep Tony in the Lutheran try and be direct with him as much as possible as well are you feeling okay in yourself no you feel a bit rough do you feel sick at the moment yeah and he's vomited again this evening yeah yes and he just woke up I mean while he was sleeping you look terrible how many years thank you guys yeah we had a cruise book to go um because I could give you regular anniversary when he started with this catheter problems in June the doctor's advised us to cancel oh no oh well if you checked so okay apart from your blood pressure your blood pressure is quite low at the moment which could be due to the fact that you've been vomiting at this Blood so we need to get you checked over at the Manor all right yeah you gotta go yeah are you gonna come with it oh yes because he can't talk and tell them anything okay [Music] there we go what we'll do is put your feet up as well let's just get over this way a little bit can you lift that arm up for me so we just pop it out and then I'll let the catchy all right [Music] Sheila and Tony have been married for 55 years she's been his main carer since a major stroke 24 years ago [Music] I bet you've had enough of hospitals over your time isn't here yes you really had the stroke in 1993. all right okay so it's been a while I'm at the my age one they'll let you come home on Christmas Eve yeah with me Christmas day yeah but at the Finish just you said they said now we can stop at all it'll be all right at home and if you managed okay since yeah he's been a struggle of times oh yeah you're right Tony yeah just keep on smiling eh when Tony arrives at hospital 12 minutes later he's still nauseous foreign he can now get the medical help he needs [Music] 55 years ago yeah that's commitment man it must be really bad for him at the minute the way he can't speak because he understands everything yeah I can't imagine it it must be so frustrated not being able to say what you want to say but having a full ticket yeah I bet she's got little ways he does yeah it's nice to see him like that [Music] foreign [Music] I couldn't imagine doing anything else no for me when when you go out to patients and you know you can see that you've made a difference and you get that thanks I don't see it as a job and it's not even the big job service here it comes sometimes it can just be going and having a chat making a cup of tea for someone having a chat yeah and definitely making them feel better making the day you can see you've made a difference and that's enough for me that's that's job satisfaction for me um yeah and the proper jobs cardiac arrests where you get a Roski you know you get them back you've worked your backside off for the best part of an hour yeah so you've got to hospital you're dripping my sweat yeah but this person's still alive and it's because of you that this person's alive it's the best job it's the best job in the world you can't get any better than that no it really is [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] paramedics Liam Dale and Gaz Clark's New Year's Eve shift will take them right through to the early hours [Music] perfect New Year's Eve loving it right now this is it spending it with you guys this is this is what I've always wanted from my new year where have you been all my life [Applause] thank you they've been called out to an 86 year old Ukrainian woman with a history of stroke hello hello good evening how are we doing all right yeah no problem yeah her main carer is her son Dan he's become very concerned that his mum Paris gevi known as Pat has completely stopped speaking hello hello Pat how are you hello all right my name is Liam this is Gary hello Patty how can we help this evening um [Music] she's completely under responsive couldn't get her to drink anything she wouldn't talk yeah she usually says you know goodbye to the carer isn't that the team now need to do a set of different tests on hat to assess her condition so normally we'd be talking to us as she is would she oh yeah she gets confused uh you know through the through the stroke she had yeah but yes she'll she'll she'll talk okay since the struck she's not she normally talked to you as normal but uh yes before the first stroke she was uh she's much better than she was after the second well the second one completely not the stuffing out of her yeah but you could still still talk to her yeah but she does uh she does get you know confused she's not been like this before oh yeah no no she sounded off days and but not to completely uh not there we go can you pinch that for me I think she's pinching that hard she is yes what time would you say this all started today then with the lack of speech about an hour ago or so thank you it's literally that yeah lack of being able to form you know exactly what we're doing don't you yeah totally understand [Music] Pat are you finding that you want to speak but can't get the words out she speaks English but I'll try and uh talk to in the Ukrainian mom what did you say again I was trying to work out if she's trying to speak but can't get the words out of her mouth that's what she's saying he won't come out there's some neurological happening I'm really excited exactly what it is I mean she's been sick or anything no no no I mean coordinations is normal for her I found anyway ecg's okay is it yeah regular and yeah everything Pat's observations are normal but the fact she remains speechless is a real worry the concern is if there's something happening neurologically again I mean she's got a history of Strokes anyway yes if there's something that's affecting the part of a brain that relates to a speech in the formulation of words and and not especially after having a previous stroke so but we do have a new speech disturbance in the last hours so we have to treat accordingly for that aren't we the only thing we can do sir is just take your beanie really yeah I mean okay under the assumption that it is again a follow-up with the stroke okay I was really worried about Pat if she's had another stroke which is highly likely the consequency would have been devastating not being able to talk to her son anymore I'm really sorry we're gonna have to take you up the hospital okay we're a bit concerned that Something's Happened in your brain that's causing you not be able to speak all right I know you understand what's going on who's this hey I'm speaking now that rules well there you go now when I do a proper question mom what's the matter with you that's getting ready to alert it to the opposite I mean I've been so quiet you can't talk but you're talking and have a look in your mouth Pat's miraculous recovery rules out a stroke tongue's a little bit going on the whiter side is it your mouth that hurts or swallowing does your mouth hurt your tongue does it hurt you understand yeah to Bullet no no Liam thinks he knows what is wrong do you have a sore throat does he hurt to swallow police mom does yeah it hurts in your throat yeah when you swallow to what here I'll get you some water mum huh well you need to drink who said I do no she's the mom you're only a child you have to drink something otherwise you're going to be unwell okay you have to listen to him if you're looking after you want to turn around it's better in it no especially not tonight and as you're worried to death even the carers got really worried about it yeah but you would do especially with the history I mean yeah she was my relative I'd be worried as well you know cool so it's best to be on the safe side all the best my love okay happy New Year thank you guys thank you very much okay mum you're happy now all right thank you again with nothing more than a sore throat to deal with the crew can get back to their busy New Year's Eve shift thank you I think she was just sick of talking to be honest and she's got a sore throat yeah a bit raspy she didn't want to talk because she's got a sore throat I need to have to talk best to be on the safe side I get what I was worried though she's had Strokes in the past and she's not speaking it's technically a speech disturbance isn't it an impediment yeah foreign tics are on shift across the West Midlands and the new year is almost here ten nine eight seven six five four three two one Happy New Year [Applause] don't be forgotten [Music] should all acquaintance [Music] [Music] thank you New Year's Eve has tipped into New Year's Day and the pressure is still on for the West Midlands Ambulance Service my face is melting now is it I do apologize 26 degrees I like it well it's warmer than this large that's generating paramedic Joe Wilson and student paramedic Ash bolus are nearing the end of their New Year shift yeah we've got a job we've got a job uh it's to a 23 year old female and it stating that she feels like she's not coping [Music] the young woman Abigail had phoned 111 and they immediately requested an ambulance this one over the wreath on the door yeah this one here Abigail's dad Alan is waiting to let them in hello come to see Abby she's took an overdose well that's what she's told me which room's obvious ly well that says boudoir okay hang on where's the light hello hello hello what's the reason for the call today honorable yeah things basically five dollars right though okay Abigail has depression and was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder at 19. it's also only her and her dad's second new year since losing her mum to cancer have you taken anything won't be taken a lot of Cody [Music] is prescribed as a painkiller what time does it take them about half an hour ago okay an adult should take no more than two tablets at a time and no more than ten in one day Abby has taken at least double the maximum recommended daily dosage all at once obviously you know it's going to be in a conveyanced hospital didn't you we need to get you there within the hour really so that they can give you what we call activated charcoal you swallow it doesn't you stomach neutralizes the effects of the drugs that you swallowed stops from being ingested into your system foreign crew need to get Abigail to hospital within an hour of the overdose for the charcoal treatment to work ready yeah but as Abigail collects her things she runs into her dad and they have an argument [Music] upset she refuses to go to hospital you gotta come with us sweet you've took an overdose obviously her and her father loggerheads again which made Abby extremely upset so she took flight and jumped back onto her bed and was you know short of refusing to come it was apparent for us that we needed to get to hospital and within 60 Minutes um so at this point you know it was a Race Against Time really much [Music] to me much my second body what you notice codeine you've taken we can get this resolved and sorted right now and it not give you any lasting effects but you need to come with us to hospital now mate I know you say that now mate you will care later in life wouldn't you and you don't want you don't want this to affect you huh do ya hey so why don't you wouldn't wouldn't start with us now jump on the ambulance we'll get you sorted and uh you know get your get you back home and then you can sort everything out with your dad can't yeah say again [Music] I think he does my age I think he's just you know he's had a bit of drinking and you know we misbehave when we've got a bit to drink [Music] um well I was about you look after yourself now then and come and jump on the ambulance quickly so I can get you to hospital with time of the essence Joe needs Abby's dad to help talk her around be due to tell her that she needs to go to hospital she doesn't think you care happy you need to go to hospital darling to go on that all right did you hear the ABS yeah yeah it doesn't hurt you don't need to do your mates oh yeah you could turn four aren't you yeah We Care Mario to us we wouldn't be uh trying to persuade you would we and you've called for help we don't just do it as a job we do it because we care so I mean we want to get you to hospital and get you sorted but honestly Abby time is really ticking come on Abby you've called for help let us help you [Music] last Abigail agrees to accept help there's a seat there for you mate sit on it you should have known some comfy right let's go and get sorted shall we yeah just some tissue hump yourself they're free blow your nose anymore [Music] Abigail's mum died suddenly from cancer 20 months ago for her and her dad it's been a lot to come to terms with it's been quite through quite a lot considering you're 23 and if you do this on a regular on a regular occasion it's gonna yeah but you know if things spiral out of control and it keeps happening you're gonna damage your internal organs and for somebody 23 they've got a lot of life in front of you all right thank you if you want to would you like some more tissue yeah hang on there you go help yourself Abigail is quickly taken inside for the Urgent Treatment she needs [Music] the first managed to get there in time to have to deactivate you just to get out of the uh [Music] it's the first of January driving home New Year New Beginnings foreign who had a clot on his lung and was struggling to breathe improved in hospital but doctors couldn't determine whether his chest pains were the result of a heart attack or another blood clot on his heart he saw in the New Year in a d and was allowed home six days later [Music] Bradley whose New Year's Eve party was cut short when a firework exploded in his hood was transferred to a specialist Burns unit despite his fears he didn't need a skin graft and there was no permanent damage to his eyes [Music] Tony whose blood pressure had dropped after persistent vomiting was diagnosed with multiple organ failure due to her reaction to his medication after more than a week on an acute medical ward he returned home but sadly Tony passed away two months later Pat who frightened her son when she stopped speaking on New Year's Eve was treated at home for a sore throat once it cleared
