Around 7:30 a.m. on April 22nd, 2024, a quiet neighborhood suddenly went into a state of panic. Neighbors saw a Jeep make a loud noise as it crossed the driveway and drove straight onto the porch of the house in front. The woman driving the car, Kim Marie Stevens, lived right next door. She said the brakes suddenly stopped working and the car accelerated on its own instead of stopping. Thankfully, no one was injured, but both the house and the car sustained significant damage. A few minutes later, police arrived on the scene. >> Hi. Anybody need an ambulance? >> Uh, I don't believe she's like pretty shaken up. >> Oh, do you know where she is? >> Yes, she's back. >> Oh, there to get her phone. >> Okay. We usually use leader for the tow company. Does that Does that sound reasonable? Okay, >> I'll get leader heading this way and then if you just want to stand by. Uh we'll go over here to front of my squad. Okay. >> I can't go into my car. >> Not right now because it's too dangerous. I don't want to see you get injured or anything like that. >> Just 122. All right, Kim, you said you got nothing to drink, right? >> No. >> No. No alcohol at all. So, you're going to be zeros on this, right? >> I'm not doing a >> You're not going to do a PBT? Okay. All right, Kim. At this point, you can stand up for me. One more thing. One more thing. Stand. All right. I'm gonna put you I'm gonna Right now, you're placed under arrest. Suspicion operator. I don't have my glasses. >> Okay, we don't we don't we don't need you to see. We're going right in front of my squad. Just going to search you real quick here. Oh, right in front of my squad. Want to come out and talk to me real quick? >> All right. Uh, no, I don't need to come in. Kim's got to come down with us uh to the police department. She's been having a little bit too much to drink to be driving this morning. Okay. Um, >> must be from yesterday. >> Must maybe. Uh, so we're going to need someone to come get her that's sober and val to drive. Okay. >> So, Okay, perfect. Well, we we'll have her give you a call. Okay. that car. >> Leader's on their way to remove the vehicle. >> Driving it forward into the driveway. >> Uh Leader's going to come here and remove the vehicle and then you can work out with leader whether or not you're going to they're going to bring it back to their shop or if you pay them for the removal leader towing. Okay. >> What's that? >> Uh not right now. I did tell your husband where you're going though. Okay. And he said he'll he'll he'll arrange to have something to come get you. Okay. >> Can I go home today, you say? >> Yeah, you should be able to. You don't have any warrants or nothing like that. So, all right. Sit tight. I'm sure, Kim. >> Okay, I wouldn't lie to you. >> I'm nervous because >> Don't be nervous, Kim. Okay, don't be nervous. I I'll I'm Officer Barco again. I'm gonna explain everything to you as we go along with this process. Okay. I'm I uh I show everybody your respect. I just ask for it in return. Okay. You're you're in good hands, Kim. All right. >> 461. Yes. Yes. You're going to be you're going to be looking. Okay. Good morning, gentlemen. So, my my driver was backing out of that driveway and stated the brakes failed. I want to test the brakes after you get it down and I can safely test them. All right. But they're in custody now. >> Uh suspicion operating. >> Go ahead. >> Yeah. >> Yep. >> When you get it down, I just I'm going to grab uh uh the the brakes, make sure they work. And they live right there. The husband wanted to know how much it would cost you to remove it and then put it in their driveway. >> We got to see what else. >> Yep. Yep. So, I told him you would get it. He's at his home. All right. Kim tow's going to get take good care of your vehicle. You said your insurance is in the glove box. Okay. I'm sorry. What? >> Sheriff, if you want to stand up here just for a second, but just right here. Okay. >> You're not going to throw up on me or anything, are you? >> No. >> No. Okay. All right. Go stand up right here. You can get some air. >> I know. I just have high anxiety. >> Oh, I totally get it. Yep. I get it. I get it. We'll stand right here. Right there. Some fresh air. >> All right, Kim. So, the leader is going to stand right there. Okay. leader's going to take your vehicle and there your husband wants him to just drop it in the driveway. So, that's most likely where it's going to go. Do you want me to grab anything out of that vehicle for you? >> I think my purse is in there. >> Want your purse to go with you? Yeah. >> Okay. Purse is going to go with you then. And then I I just need to go in there and get your uh insurance information. Okay. >> Okay. And then um um am I going to be okay? >> Yeah, you're fine. You didn't injure yourself or nobody else. Parts can be replaced. People can. Okay. >> So, it's it just you made a decision. Okay. And uh we just we're going to work with that decision today. Okay. It is what it is. Okay. Um >> but I'm coming home today to my family. Yep. Right. I can come home. >> You're going to have to call someone to come get you. But yeah. And your husband I talked to him and he's aware. So you're going to be just fine. Okay. >> Am I I mean I just I'm a good person. I know. I know. I know. I know. I know. I know. I know. But you know I am a good person. You know, I got a family >> and I total it and it's things happened. I'm just glad nobody was on that for sure was walking on the sidewalk. Okay. >> Um again, parts can be replaced. People can. So, um >> but I'm okay, right? >> Yeah, you're you're okay. You comes to you're not going to go to prison. Okay. Um right now, uh you're under under arrest. Suspicion oper. Okay. It looks like it's a first offense. So, we're going to go back to the police department. I got a bunch of paperwork to go through and then we'll get to the bottom of it there. Okay. >> So, you're in good hands and then we'll call you'll call and get someone to come get you >> because I can't really see it yourself. >> No. >> I get that. >> Yeah. So, >> has your husband been drinking this morning, too? >> No. >> Just be I mean, I'm not going to do anything to him. I just know if he's been drinking, he's not going to be able to come get you. >> Make sense? >> Does that make sense? Has he been drinking? Cuz if he has I don't want him to get in trouble by coming down there to get you, then all a sudden he's been drinking and then he's in trouble. So, if he's been drinking >> No. >> Has he been drinking though? >> No. No, he has not. >> Okay. >> Yeah. No, he's not. >> All right. Perfect. Because I want to make sure whoever comes get you is not going to get in trouble themselves. Make sense? All right. Perfect. >> But if they can come get me, right? >> Yep. Somebody come get you. Um, you'll have your phone so you'll be able to use your phone to call somebody and we'll go from there. Okay. >> All right. Go sit down in there again. I I need you to sit down. I need to go look at that vehicle. Okay. >> Okay. Can I >> You want to watch her for a second? She's got anxiety and she just needed some air. I need to check that vehicle's brake system. Kim. Kim. Yes. >> I know. >> Why? >> I don't know. Cuz I couldn't stop the car. >> Also, I'm a good I'm a good mom. I'm a good person. I'm just saying. >> Yeah. I'm not mistakes happen. It's all right. Nobody got hurt. Yeah. Nobody got hurt. So, you know, that's why they're called accidents. But, you know, sometimes when we make mistakes, there's consequences to those mistakes. And, you know, that's part of being an adult. We just got to deal with them and go on with life. Nobody's hurt, nobody's injured. >> That's the main thing. This is all property. It could all be fixed and replaced. >> Okay. >> So, >> but I'm going to be okay, right? >> Yeah. We're going to You ever been arrested for OWI or anything like that before? Okay. So, my guess is what'll happen here is once we get you get back to the station and process you and run some tests, then we'll get you home to your husband. >> Home? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Cuz I just I just got real high anxiety. I don't take any medication for it, but I got real high. >> I understand. I'll see that. Are you okay if I leave the window open, cracked open? Can you just sit back in there for me for a little bit? I just got a couple things we got to take care of. >> Sure. >> We're within a You can yell to us if something's going on, but do you need medical attention or anything like that? No, I just >> Does your Does your anxiety get so bad that you need medical attention? >> It can, but I don't think I will. >> If it gets to that point, let us know. We'll call an ambulance over to the station and they'll come check you out. Okay. >> Okay. >> All right. Thank you. >> 909. >> I'm sorry. What was your first name again? >> I know you can, but can I just have the these things off of me? >> I can't take them off. >> You can't. >> You're in custody. I'm not allowed to do that. >> I'm sorry. >> They hurt me. >> They hurt you in what way? Well, they're just tight on my hand. >> They are pretty They are pretty loose. >> Yeah, they're pretty loose. I can get I've got fat fingers and I can get my whole finger in there. You got You got No, you know, don't take this far away. You got kind of thin wrists and bony arms. So, >> but I'm going to be okay when I go down, right? You guys, you don't mind? >> Yeah. Our station our station's right over here. You're not going to jail. >> Not that I'm aware of. I I don't see any reason that you're going to jail. So, just have a seat in the car. Okay. For me. >> Okay. Okay. >> Just watch your head. Let me have you >> No, I I I know. I know. >> All right. Watch your head. I don't want you. >> I've watched cops a lot. >> All right, sounds good. >> All right, Wor, you ready? >> One second. >> We've got your insurance info. Obviously, because there's been an accident, you're required to exchange information with the other party. Are you okay if I give them your insurance info? >> Perfect. >> I didn't find your purse in the car. No, I didn't search it search it in the back or anything like that, but uh uh I didn't find your purse. I found the key fob and your insurance. Okay. Uh if the vehicle stays at your yard there, your driveway, then obviously your husband will grab the purse out of it. Okay. All right. Yes. What's that? >> Don't be nervous. You're going to be okay. Okay. You're going to be just fine. You didn't get injured or nothing like that. And uh my process should take about 45 minutes. Okay. You you you'll be out of those cuffs in the next 15 minutes. Okay. Okay. [Applause] >> Morning sir. Looks like leader's just about done here. They have the vehicle. So if you want to stand out here and make an arrangement with them either to drop it here or to have them take it back with them. Okay. It looks like the the vehicle's got some damage. I don't know if it's drivable or not. So, if it's not drivable, then maybe you don't want it blocking your vehicle in. And we're going to need somebody to come get her in about 45 minutes to an hour, and they have to be sober. Okay. So, if you've been drinking or something like that, then then Okay. Uh, so I'll have her call you or whoever she wants to come get her. Okay. At the White Fish Bay involved. >> Nope. Nope. >> There's no bondish. >> Whitefish Bay PD. Okay. >> All right. >> What's that? >> I I'm kind of disabled. Oh, okay. I'll I'll see if he can come up there and talk to you. Okay. >> And what's your first name again, sir? >> John. >> John. And the same the last name as her? Same last name? >> Same last name. >> Okay. >> All right. So, his name's John. He's he's the one that uh is also the owner of the vehicle. He's he's disabled, so we can't really walk down here. He just wants to talk to him. Okay. Okay. I guess right now >> I'm going to take some photos real quick and then >> Yeah, we're good. Johnson, thank you. [Applause] Oh, come on. There we go. There's one couple last photos and then I'll be ready for our drove by with all the stuff that we're going to keep going. >> Yeah. Let me get some good photos of the rear of it because I couldn't because of how dangerous it is to go on the stairs. >> Yeah.
