on February 13th 2020 four shots were fired by three officers within 5 Seconds of entering an apartment belonging to Lopez Lopez and his wife at Park Vista Apartments on Sparks Boulevard an emergency call to police turned deadly leaving a community shocked and a family mourning the loss of a loved one the question on everyone's mind is what really happened to Abel Lopez Lopez in this video we examine the circumstances surrounding Abel Lopez Lopez's fatal encounter with police officers join us as we explore the complexities of this tragic event seeking to understand the true story and its aftermath on February 13th 2020 the Sparks Police Department received a call from a school counselor from an elementary school located in Sparks through the investigation officers learned a child and her mother had been living in a hotel room due to the child's stepfather acting erratically at their home while carrying a firearm Sparks police detectives were unable to contact the student's mother however they were able to speak with the student's grandmother who stated she had not heard from her daughter all day which is uncharacteristic for her and she was concerned for her daughter's well-being later that day Sparks police dispatch received a call from a woman who stated her stepfather was trying to kill her mother mother the caller advised her mother had texted her and said that her husband was taking her places against her will and was possibly being taken to an apartment located at 565 Sparks Boulevard Abel Lopez Lopez's wife had been very suspicious for months that something was terribly wrong probably that her husband was possibly abusing their seven-year-old daughter the little girl had also exposed the issue to her teacher who quickly alerted the police the Sparks police Department sprang into action launching an investigation and working to track down Lopez Lopez yes okay have either of them been drinking do know no I don't think so okay and have do they have any weapons in the house later that evening the couple's 16-year-old daughter called 911 with a terrified voice apparently she was terrified that her father Abel Lopez Lopez was going to harm her mother she then read out loud a series of emergency text messages her mother had sent her requesting for help the messages sent over a 2-minute period starting at 7:31 p.m. read I'm at the 71 store near our apartment Abel is with me I think he's trying to kill me please call the police hurry when the dispatcher asked if there were any weapons in the house the daughter fearfully replied he has a gun she then proceeded to give the police her location [Applause] shot shot fire one down get her up get her up get [Applause] her out everybody out [Applause] pleas SP please come out blue blue coming out shot's fired shot's fired out out out out out out out everybody out police officers arrived at the apartment and set up a perimeter outside just before 11:00 p.m. Lopez Lopez's wife opened the door briefly then quickly shut it again a Sparks police officer attempted to gain entry by kicking the door but was unsuccessful the officer then turned the door handle and led four other officers into the apartment the first officer to enter yelled show us your hands unfortunately Lopez Lopez responded by pulling out a black gun which was later identified as llama brand 45 caliber semi-automatic pistol from a black back the officers reacted by opening fire striking Lopez Lopez in the right shoulder right upper arm right hand and head the shooting was fatal and Lopez Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene action team was put in place this team consisted of officers from the Sparks Police Department SWAT team Patrol officers and detectives from the regional gang unit the purpose of this team is to preserve the life of innocent involved persons on scene if an incident escalates prior to the SWAT team's arrival before the SWAT team arrived the victim began to exit the apartment but she immediately closed the door on the officers and retreated inside not knowing the condition of the victim or severity of the situation inside the emergency action team made entry into the apartment officers were immediately met with a male subject armed with a black firearm officers fired their service weapons striking the suspect and began giving verbal commands a Reno officer who was part of the emergency action team also fired his weapon striking the suspect ultimately the suspect was pronounced deceased on scene [Music] the [ __ ] find the girl the girl one down get her up get her up get [Applause] her everybody out according to the investigative report and body cam images he'd raised a black bag containing a pistol while facing officers and was hit four times including once in the head by a shotgun blast in summation the shooting officers in this case reasonably believed Lopez Lopez posed an imminent danger that he would kill or cause great bodily injury to the officers and his wife the investigative report says the officers actually and reasonably feared for their own lives and the lives of others as they had reports that his wife was being held hostage and that when they opened the door Lopez Lopez was in fact armed with a firearm and he drew it the Wu County District Attorney's Office looked into the shooting of Abel Lopez Lopez by police officers in 2020 after investigating they decided that the officer's actions were Justified they believed that Lopez Lopez had pointed a gun at the officers putting them in danger and that they had to use deadly force to protect themselves and others however some people may still disagree with this decision and question whether the offic officers really needed to use lethal Force the police shooting of Abel Lopez Lopez left his community searching for answers the use of deadly force has raised serious questions about police accountability and transparency according to the police report officers fired four shots within 5 Seconds of entering Lopez Lopez's apartment the wasu County District Attorney's Office later concluded that the shooting was legally Justified however this verdict has not
