Abel Lopez-Lopez, embroiled in allegations of sexually abusing his 7-year-old stepchild, faced confrontation from his wife, S.L. The argument intensified, culminating in threats to S.L.'s life, prompting a call to 911 from S.L.'s 16-year-old daughter, T.G. Police initially searched for S.L. at the Sparks Nugget Casino but later traced her to an apartment at the Park Vista Apartments, thanks to a phone ping and information from T.G. Upon arrival, officers heard aggressive voices but no violence. The situation was deemed an active hostage scenario, leading to the formation of an Emergency Action Team comprising SWAT-trained officers from the Sparks and Reno Police Departments. At 8:55 p.m., S.L. briefly opened the apartment door before slamming it shut. Officer Dustin Beauford quickly forced entry, followed by fellow officers. Inside, they encountered S.L., who moved away with her hands raised. Lopez-Lopez then aimed a pistol at the officers, prompting a swift response. Officers Beauford, Daniel Jones, and Chris Rose fired their weapons, hitting Lopez-Lopez multiple times. Officer Rose then fired a shotgun, delivering a fatal shot to Lopez-Lopez's head. S.L. was immediately evacuated and taken to Renown Emergency Medical Center. Lopez- Lopez was declared dead at the scene. The Washoe County District Attorney later ruled the shooting justified under Nevada law.
