A naked man screaming at the top of his lungs. That man was William Mullins McLeod Jr., a Charleston attorney, former gubernatorial candidate in 2010, and now the first Democrat to announce a run for governor in the upcoming election. Officers said he appeared to be under the influence of a stimulant or narcotic. In the back of the patrol car, McLeod unleashed a chaotic tirade, insulting perceived enemies, rambling incoherently, and doubling down on his political ambitions. NO, BUT I GET >> WILLIAM MULLINS MCCLOUD JR., the Charleston attorney and 2025 Democratic candidate for South Carolina governor, didn't spend long behind bars after his bizarre arrest. He was booked on a misdemeanor charge of public disorderly conduct, but was released on a personal recognizance bond, meaning he didn't have to post any cash bail. As part of his release conditions, McCloud agreed to enter a mental health treatment program, with his defense attributing the night's events to exhaustion and a mental health episode. While an exact court date hasn't been publicly announced, court records indicate he may face jury trial proceedings as early as August 2025. In the meantime, his political aspirations have taken a serious hit. The South Carolina Democratic Party has publicly urged him to step back from campaigning and focus on his health, warning that the incident has become a major distraction. Whether this arrest ends his run for governor remains to be seen, but one thing is certain. The footage from that night will follow him throughout his campaign. For now, all eyes will be on his next court appearance and whether he can recover politically from a moment that's already cemented itself as one of the most bizarre arrests in recent South Carolina history.
