On December 1st, 2023, at approximately 1:49 p.m. outside the Arco AM gas station on Bear Valley Road in San Bernardino, California, a frantic 911 call set a dangerous chain of events in motion. Inside the store's restroom, a terrified woman had locked herself in, pleading for help after her boyfriend, 27-year-old Jorge Cardinis, allegedly threatened her with a gun. When a San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputy arrived to confront the suspect, Cardiness bolted into the store. In an instant, the situation exploded into chaos. What began as a routine call spiraled into a life ordeath struggle as the deputy fought desperately for his life with a gun that kept jamming. Sam five, I'm hit multiple times. Send meds. Suspect down. As Cardinas charged into the store, he ripped a gun from his waistband and immediately opened fire on the deputy. The deputy fired back, but in the exchange, he was hit. Bullets striking both his legs and even a taser holstered on his duty belt. The impact knocked him to the ground just outside the store. Seeing the deputy down and struggling with his weapon, Cardanis tried to seize the moment, but that split-second decision proved fatal. With no time to spare, the deputy cleared his weapon and brought it back into action, turning the tables in an instant. >> My daughter was my daughter. >> That was my daughter. Mom, you okay? [Music] >> Sam five. That's affirm. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Back outside, the deputy lay bleeding, struck five times with bullets tearing through both of his legs. He had been shot in the right thigh, left thigh, left calf, and even the bottom of his right foot. Another round ripped through his holstered taser before striking his vest. Despite the devastating injuries, help was already on the way. Deputy Anderson spent two months in recovery before making a full return to duty, a testament to his resilience and determination. As for Horge Cardinus, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman he had threatened was found safe, still barricaded inside the bathroom where she had hidden from the violence.
