On December 1, 2023 at approximately 1:49 p.m., outside the ARCO AMPM gas station on Bear Valley Road in San Bernardino County, a terrified woman barricaded herself inside the restroom—her boyfriend, 27-year-old Jorge Cardenas, had threatened her with a firearm. When a deputy arrived on scene, everything escalated in the blink of an eye. Caught in a deadly standoff, the deputy was ambushed as Cardenas burst into the store armed. Bullets struck the deputy five times—in both thighs, the left calf, and even the bottom of his foot—before ripping through his holstered Taser and grazing his vest. The deputy fell to the ground in front of the store, his survival hanging by a thread. But thanks to fast reflexes, he reloaded his firearm under fire and neutralized the threat—Cárdenas was pronounced dead at the scene. With body-worn camera footage capturing every second of the brutal encounter, this video breaks down how one experienced sergeant survived a near-fatal ambush and got back to duty.
