Meet Victoria Zava, a nurse from Peoria, Illinois, caught red-handed again. This time, police say she was spotted at Nenah Ace Hardware, ripping tags off expensive plants and hiding them under cheaper ones. Surveillance shows her strolling in at 7:45 a.m. And by 8:01 a.m., she was at the register trying to pay for the fakes while leaving the real tags behind. Claims she was told she could remove tags for larger items, but police didn't buy it. Victoria, a registered nurse. She was cuffed, booked, and now faces another retail theft charge. And yes, we've got the full body cam and surveillance video. This is Victoria Zava, shoplifter, nurse of Peoria. >> Have a seat in here. >> The cop is here. So, give me one second. So, I'm going to talk to you. Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. We can just put this down. >> 1275 street. >> Yeah. Let's see. I'll talk to you in the car real quick. 1275 126 Oak Street in the car. >> Yeah, if you could. >> Yeah, >> I'm very confused. >> I'll talk to you. >> I'd rather not have it closed if that's fine so that I can get >> I just don't want anybody else listening to their business. So, >> I'm going to read your Miranda rights. Have you had your Miranda rightites read to you before? >> Wait, so now I'm going to jail? >> I'm not saying that by any means. Do you have any prior history of retail theft? >> No. >> Okay, I'm going to watch the video. >> Okay. >> Okay. Before I do anything, just to confirm what he's saying. But let me read your Miranda rightites before I talk to you any further. All right. >> Can Okay, hold on. Can I >> Sure, you're fine. >> I'm going to go ahead and read these to you. You don't have to talk to me. Okay. >> Okay. >> It's uh you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you at court of law. You have the right to talk to a lawyer and have them present with you while you're being questioned. >> If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, won't be appointed to represent you before any question you wish. You can decide at any time to exercise these rights, not answer any questions or make any statements. Do you understand each of these rights I've explained to you? >> And having those uh rights in mind, do you wish you talk to me about what happened today? >> Yes. >> Okay. All right. >> So, I haven't watched the video yet, but he said you've been removing on multiple occasions other than today. Have you been here previously? >> I I I've been here many times. Yes. I've come here for plants. >> Sure. >> Love some plants every time. You know, grab right in here and everything. I've been here multiple times where the ladies were cuz they usually get a tray, you know, usually get like five, six plus plants. >> And she said, you know, if you have multiple, you can take the tag off or if they're bigger than like um a pint or quart, you can take the label off and bring it in. I said, "Thank you so much. Greatly appreciate it." um >> in time before last I did have a >> I did look through their um morning jasmine's and everything. I >> did remove the tag and everything >> like a owner or not sorry not an owner employee said that I could previously do I put them out I just put them in front of my car and everything. I went inside. I was talking to the older lady with glasses that is currently still working in there and has checked me out multiple times before and everything. I thought I paid for everything. Um, he said that I had tickets and or tags and they were in the candy and everything and I end up not paying for those. I said I apologize that was not my intention. I've been here multiple times. If you're going to do not take steal in any way and then come back and try to steal or take again, I said, you know, I apologize. I'm more than happy to pay for anything. He goes, nope, we're calling the cops. I'm going to jail. And I said, I I don't feel like that is necessary, but I am happy. >> I'm not saying you're going to provide anything. Even if even if it rises that level, I can give you notice here if you're cooperative. I just want to just make sure because he's saying that what you're doing is you're taking the tags >> off cheaper items, going and paying for those and then taking the more expensive items. The way he's explaining it to me, >> I'm going to go watch the video. Okay. >> And and I did remove tags again today because it was raining and everything and they were bigger ones. And again, I was told from previous times if it is a bigger one, I can put it out in front of my car and bring the tags in and everything. And I was looking at the big ones versus the little ones and everything. I assumed I took off um tags and everything of the appropriate ones and everything, I I brought him inside. Okay. >> So then when he came out and he was like, "Hey, you you were here last week." And I turned around and I said, "Yeah, yes, I was." >> Yeah. >> Not hiding here to lie, cheat, steal anything. You know, if there were ones that I did not >> Do you got your ID on you? >> Yes. >> All right. Thank you. >> Thank you. I'm going to run in, watch the video if you just want to hang out with her real quick. >> Yep. You just want to kick your legs in so I can just shut the door for now. >> I'd rather keep the door open if that's all right. >> Right. But I got to go in my car real quick. So, I just need you to kick your legs in. I'll come back. Okay. >> Then, can I stand outside the car? >> No, cuz right now you are detained for this until we can watch video and figure it out. Okay. As I said, you've been awesome and cooperative. So, >> Okay. I >> not saying you're going to be stuck any year by any means. I just have to go and do something. Okay. I'm going to run and just see if she's got any priors for >> this. Sure, that works. >> So, basically what she's doing the last time she took she got a tray of flowers. She goes in and she um took the tags off a couple plants >> and um she paid for the tray and then hid the the tags in a barrel below the cash register. So, I'm good there for sure. Today she took the tags off two plants and put them underneath the plants and then she basically paid for the right amount of plants but she paid for the cheaper >> of the two. She would basically swip switch 50% off. >> I know >> she has >> Oh, she does. >> Oh, okay. Oh, perfect. I appreciate that. >> Um, thank you. Okay. Thank you. So, you've got a warrant. I don't know if you knew that. >> I have a warrant? >> Yeah. For DUI. >> Well, I did all I did all my stuff for that. >> So, sometimes what can happen is like um miss a pay. Do you did you move or anything >> from Canton? >> Okay. To here. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Um I sent I thought >> Yeah. Something must have got missed or missed a court date or something. >> Um let me finish with this real quick. Okay. So, on the 25th, you came in and I watched the video. All right. And they've actually put out videos of this incident asking for the public's help in identifying you. Um, you came in, you bought a tray of flowers, you took the tags off two some plants out here, you took them in and you hit them in the barrel. I'm watching you on video do that. Okay. So, you've been cooperative with me today. I'm probably not going to charge you with the felony. I'm going to charge you with the misery cuz this has happened twice now. All right. Um, today you paid for you took the tags off, hit them underneath a plant. I watched you on video do it and then you paid for the cheaper of the two plants and loaded up the more expensive ones. Okay. I'm only going to charge you with a misdemeanor today. Although it technically happened on two occasion, I could charge you with a felony. You're already in enough trouble. I don't want to do that. Okay. Is that what happened pretty much accurately? >> Yes. >> Okay. All right. Well, thank you for being honest. And because you were honest, I'm only going to charge you with the misdemeanor. All right. But I got I was going to give you an NTA, but you got the warrant. So, I have to send you for the warrant. So, I'm going to have to send you for this, but I'll do the misdemeanor. I'll do it under. Okay. >> So, when you say like going booking for the for the warrant, yes, you have to see a warrant. Okay. For today, for >> No, for the warrant. For the DUI warrant. >> Correct. But I I have to go in front of a judge today and all that. And then >> it might be early enough where you still get in front of a judge today. >> Can I can I get my purse and stuff? >> Yeah, we'll get your We'll get your impound Well, no. We'll I'll talk with them and make sure we can leave this since you were cooperative versus Can you have somebody come pick it up? >> I was going to say, can I call someone? Go >> ahead. Absolutely. >> Yeah. In fact, I would do that right now. See if you can get them to come. >> Victoria, yeah, we're definitely willing to work with you. Okay. So, we don't want to do that to your car and whatnot, but the warrant, we can't just bypass that. >> So, we'll totally I understand. >> And we'll have to switch out the plants and get the correct ones in your car versus the two that you >> can I open the car and >> uh you're being cooperative with us. Just don't go to the driver's side. Just stay on the passenger side. Okay. Come on. >> Again, if you truly don't maybe understand >> Well, actually, hang tight. I'm gonna have him come out and show me which plants you're supposed to have and we'll switch them >> up with him here. So, yeah. Okay. >> But yeah, if you truly maybe are not sure you did everything you're supposed to do with the DUI stuff, >> um, explain that. You know what I mean? But unfortunately, either whether it's today or another time you get pulled over or something like we're just Yeah. >> Is that Is that your only prior is >> Yeah. >> And you've never been in any other trouble? Okay. >> Okay. Yeah. >> All right. >> No, I don't deal. >> Yeah. He posted it all over Facebook, too. >> The video of last incident. So, had you not seen that yet? >> Yeah. >> No. Okay. All right. So, they were looking for you when you came in today. So, just so you know. Is that the only two times you've done this? Cuz they're going through video now. So, Okay. >> Um, >> okay. So, my um previously Dewey the DUI >> actually. Yeah. I probably better >> with with moving or something. They said that somehow that there was a miscommunication in um my casing to go from C to here or something. There was apparently a warn out for my arrest since my since the DUI on >> and I didn't know that on the court. Yeah, they said that there was a um after I completed all of my stuff, after DUI and everything, I thought I met with um Judge Don and everything, I thought I had done all my paperwork and everything. And I guess then there was an additional hearing afterwards that I apparently missed um well over like 2 years ago and I didn't know it and I've apparently had a warrant over my arrest and so now they're going to have to take me in for that. This everything was just kind of chocked up to a misdemeanor for me taking or a ticket for me taking the um um thingies off and everything. And one of them was for a big and one is for a large and I have two larges. So he's taking um that out and everything. So, cuz when I went in everything, I was, you know, looking at licorice and um going for the licorice knot and they're taking me in for the warrant on the DUI. And I I didn't even know that. said, "Thank you for being very cooperative that I can call and try to get stuff figured out, but I apparently have to go in front of a judge. They're going to take me to booking. I don't know if that's there in the courthouse." Like, >> I don't I don't I don't understand any of this. I don't like No, I sound dumb. Like, I I don't get it. So, they have to take me in. Yes. That's what he said. He goes, you know, I could I would just give you a ticket, but with the warrant thing, like I have to take you in for that. >> All right. If you want to hop out and switch the plants out. These were the two that you were supposed to have. Okay. >> Did you get a hold of him? >> Um, I did get a hold of him. Did he say anything about like >> Well, he I'll let you talk to him about that if you want to get out. And uh uh he said you are going to be banned from the property. Okay. >> I'm just I'll Let him >> Yeah, go ahead. Just do it from the passenger side here for me. Thank you. >> You all good with me? >> Um, do you want to just tell her she's banned? I told her, but >> you're banned. >> Understandable. Do Can I have someone come and get the car? It will be a little bit for afterwards or is there >> how how long are you talking? >> Um I mean he said it might be like 2 hours. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. I asked him I asked him for I asked him for a little leeway to not tow your car for a little bit. So um and he sounds like he's not going to just have him as quick as possible try to get it out of here cuz the more he thinks about it. He's pretty upset right now. He might you know. Also, >> so as silly as it sounds, cuz >> I don't I don't know this process. I'm sorry. So, I'm going to county. >> You'll go out to the county jail, you'll get booked in, >> and then for warrants now, you got to see a judge. >> And so then, as silly as it sounds, is that like they start seeing people on three? >> Uh, it's up to the It's up to the county. And like I >> Yeah, it's up to the county. Um, this whole process is new to all of us. So, it's up to the judge and the county like when you get to see like I not to the county, it's up to the judge. So, is it if you get out there early enough, which you might still you it's possible you could see one today and then get released, but it's possible it could be tomorrow, too. >> Okay. >> Okay, >> understandable. >> Yeah, we'll try to get you out there as soon as possible and hopefully. >> Thank you. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> All right. You've been cooperative with us, so Nope. That looks good. Does she have somebody for the car? >> Yes, but it's going to be a couple hours. And then I told him her to talk to him cuz he didn't give me like a straight up answer. >> He's just like like kind of looked at me like he wants to to tell it so bad. He's mad at her, which I get. >> Um and then he gave her a big lecture and said he would basically I think he's going to let it stay. >> He's like, I want to stick it to you so bad. But okay, at 2 hours it'll be fine. So I'm going to show >> when the wagon gets here. I'm going to go back up there one more time and look >> look at that video a little bit more just to I wrote the times down, but I don't think anybody will make an issue of it that I did it that way to keep it a misdemeanor. >> Log in, please. >> I don't think so. >> Yeah, I just know technically on the second one it's supposed to be a felony, I think. But I I don't want to charge her with that since she was cooperative. Sorry, Trumbull. I was going to >> you don't even say sorry to me if you leave you don't perfectly quiet day. >> She had a warrant now. Come on. >> Let's see. Chocolate being cooperative. I don't know. Go get her information. Write her noticed up here. Call it a day. >> If it wasn't everything out of your pockets except for money and put it in this bag for me. Victoria Zava thought she could outsmart the cameras, but Peoria PD had other plans. From scrubs to handcuffs, once again, Victoria's shopping trip ended in a jail booking. Stay tuned because this is just one of many unbelievable cases we're exposing. Drop your thoughts in the comments. Do repeat offenders like Victoria deserve a second chance, or should the system finally throw the book at her?
