Welcome back to Mikey Pipes. Uncuffed and uncensored, where the footage is raw and the truth cuts deep. Put your hands up. I'll have you sit right in there. They watched him quietly, tampering with gift cards, slotting them back into place like nothing happened. But what police found in his car would unravel a multi-state fraud scheme worth tens of thousands. On November 7th, 2024, officers with the Grafton Police Department responded to a Walgreens on Wisconsin Avenue after a store manager reported suspicious activity. The suspect, later identified as 52-year-old Guangoju of Chicago, had just returned altered gift cards to the store's gift card rack. He left quickly, but not before the manager caught his description, including his vehicle and license plate. Minutes later, a similar call came from another Walgreens, this one in nearby Cedarberg. Police moved quickly, locating and stopping Ju's vehicle. Inside, what they discovered was staggering. Over 1,800 gift cards tucked into two duffel bags. Each card surgically tampered with. Retailers included Amazon, Xbox, Visa, Nike, and more. 180. What specifically was the call that you got for a Walgreens? Were you just inside? Were you inside the store? No. Are you parking your car here? No. No. I need to clear some stuff up with another officer. Please stay where you stay right here. So, he I There's a huge language barrier with it. He says he didn't go in the store, but he also said he's not parking here. Um, I don't know. I'm trying to like talk to him through a translator app, but then I was originally like window with him and I talked to him for a second and he was slightly understanding me, so I don't know what, but he does have a translator app like readily available on his phone. So, hey, question for you. Was that guy in the store? Yeah. Where was he in the store? That's where we're going to we're checking it right now. We just started looking at um so he was hiding. Okay. They told me he walked around. Yeah. And then he went, I think Yeah. Right over here. Yeah. We're all in our office. Okay. And then Hi there. But we're going to check those gift cards after. Which gift cards? Yeah. the last month that were like okay I might be I'm just concerned about the appointment. Oh yeah. Oh later. Oh just a second. I'm sorry. I'm going to go. Okay. So uh we have the guy detained outside right now. Yeah. He went to the garage in Walgreens. I I was on the phone with the manager and he's like describing what he looks like and I'm like, "Wait, he's here." He plays he placed gift cards in the store. Yeah. So, that's why I was checking my cameras to see. Yeah. That's been the new thing lately apparently is people putting gift cards come back as obviously. Yeah. Cuz they do such a good job. Yeah. Yeah. Does he have him in his car? Can you look in his car? We can't go in his car yet. We're working on that. We probably will. I don't like that. Um You never catch anyone, so this is so exciting. Yeah. Are you able to see on the cameras? Uh, that's what I if he puts any gift cards out. Um, it's going to be hard. I can ask my front cashier, too. Okay. I was just So, cuz that's what they had on camera in Grafton is that he's like taking gift cards and putting them out. Yeah. He was definitely down that aisle when I said people looking cuz he I think he thought I was suspicious. I don't have it on camera at all. Okay. So, all we could do is ask my front cashier if she's on anything cuz she stares directly at Okay, I'll go talk to her. Um, do you want me to show her the picture of him or No, kind of just leave it. He's outside right now. I saw him before he left. So, I know. I We were watching the camera. Yeah. All right, we'll get it figured out. Question for you. Yes. Did you see anyone in around the gift card area recently? Uh, not that I know of. Okay. Uh, within the last like 10 minutes, anything like that? Oh, 10 20 minutes. No. No. Was there anybody else around like on the floor? No, just me. I don't think so. Okay. Sorry. That's right. So, the thing is, too, I think he might if he just gets Dave, do you have any Do you know what kind of cards they tampered with before I tear these all up? Can you send me a picture of which kind so I can look at mine? Okay. If you could send me a picture of some of the styles so I can I'll tear those ones apart. All right. But he's going to send me pictures of the ones that were tampered with over there. Yeah. Now they're just tampering with the ones that are already here or they're putting new ones out. So I'm hoping he has some in his car cuz they take them home, tamper them, and then bring them back tampered with. And then we just get the follow from the customer that's pissed off. Well, the numbers, the three-digit number is not scratched off on this. Oh, I see. But this one seems gluey. So, I wonder if this one they glue it back. So, they take a razor blade and they slice them open. Yeah. And then they Yeah. Glue it back. [Music] Interesting. I don't know. I'll be right back with you once you get that stuff. All right. Sounds good. They have no clue. They can't. There's no camera that directly shows the gift cards that are here. So, what what are they supposed to say with the issue? So, what they're doing people are This is the newest scam is they'll buy gift cards, take them home, tamper with them, like take a razor blade, come off, put them back on the shelf, and when the person use or buys that gift card, they've set it up so that money just automatically gets deposited or they steal the gift cards and put them back or something like that. That's supposedly what he was. He was putting gift cards out that were already tampered with. So when someone buys them, they activate them. He can see the B he'll get a notification that they're b the balance is on them and then he can just deposit just take the money out. Got it. So they have them on video doing it out. So she was at Grafton or at Walgreens and then got called later. She was going back to Walgreens when I talked to her. It's great. The problem is I want to talk to Nate about it real quick. So I was calling the freaking radio, but he won't answer that over his phone. We have a situation at Walgreens where party was at the graft in Walgreens putting tampered with gift cards out. So like uh when someone goes and buys it, it automatically goes the money goes to him. Then he was doing I believe he was doing that here as well. My question here is if we somehow get in this car and search through his bag, which I believe we're going to do when Melissa gets here, search through his duffel bag he's got on the front seat. If he just has a bunch of gift cards in there, how how would we prove that he's would we kind of prove that they were tampered with? And then what if so, what kind of violation or crime are we looking at? What I was uh explained by the store is that normally what they're doing is they're taking ones, they're taking some from the store, they're going home, cutting them open with like a razor blade, scratching off the three-digit number on the back, and like getting the information, and then people are loading the cards, and then when the people load the cards, he just downloads that. Well, if we find ones that are tampered with here that were the same ones that were in drafting. Where were you before this? Chicago. Where were you right before this? As in within the last hour. Can you flip the translation so you can speak into it? And [Applause] did you make any of their stops at any of their businesses recently? No. Where was the last place that you stopped? Okay. [Music] I asked him if like he went anywhere else besides here. He said he was in Chicago. And then he said that uh I asked did you stop anywhere else in the last hour? He said I went somewhere. I don't know where it was. What' you guys figure out? She He didn't send me the picture, but he said that the police officer is coming over here. So maybe I just don't know what they like. We have a fingerprint on one, so I'm assuming that one was glued back together. What do you mean? I don't know. Okay. But I don't They're so hard to tell. So I'm hoping that she has Yeah. She had video and she took pictures. She's on her way here and she's been around for about 5 minutes. Yeah. So, it's an 8 minute drive from here to the point. So, does explain this to me. Okay. So, I come in, I put a tampered gift card, you come in as a customer, you buy this gift card. Yeah. This $100 is now in my pocket and you are out $100. How do you get Do you just steal the gift card to start? Yeah. They come and they steal the gift cards. They go home. They tamper them. Okay. So, these aren't loadable amounts. There's already money. Like there's already these if you buy them, there's only one value with these ones, right? Yeah. I mean, I don't I don't know if they've tampered the ones. I don't think they do those cuz it would be low money potentially. So, we're looking like $1500 each if we can figure out which ones are tamper. Yeah. But like I've had two cases at my store in the last month of tampered gift cards. Yeah. All right. Well, she just got here. I'm going to step outside. I'll be right back. So annoying. Who are you talking to? L right here. Hi. Did you guys do like the reboot thing with your gift cards? Like the reset? The reset? Yeah. Okay. So, so they just pulled off all the ones that are open. They pulled some that looked potentially weird. Was this one one of the ones? That was one of them. Yeah. Yeah. This one actually has a fingerprint on it when they most of them didn't have that new update. Most of them were the old ones with the like tag at the top. So, something they pulled off. We thought looked weird. Oh, that we did. I was trying to see the open. No. So, what's pulled off on them? The tags thing like the tags. Oh, that sometimes like that pin number will be scratched off. And like these are the updated ones that have the red part, but then like the older ones doesn't have this red part and it has like a tab that you peel off. Yeah. Okay. So, so we know like Walgreens doesn't sell any of these. So he would have put out just our store all of these. Did you get the video already? There's no video covering this. That one cuts off a here like Andy and the front registers just point down the register. Is there more of them in the car cuz I'm assuming he's planning on hitting several locations. We uh we were actually talking about that. I'm going to go call my detective again. Also, uh DHS might be interested in this too. Homeland Security. Okay. Don't touch my bag. Yeah, I won't. I won't. I promise. Do you want your own bag? I'm just going to separate out what the with the Do you want me to label the Cedarberg so that you guys can I will get a evidence bag? Yeah, you This wasn't just a case of petty theft. J was part of a sophisticated gift card draining scam. Here's how it works. Scammers steal blank cards off store shelves and take them home. They carefully peel back the packaging, remove the card, scratch off the coating to reveal the barcode and pin, and record the information. Then the cards are recealed and placed back on store racks like nothing happened. Once a customer unknowingly purchases and activates the card, the scammers bots or dark web systems alert them instantly, allowing them to drain the card's funds remotely within seconds. Police believe J wasn't acting alone, calling this a larger criminal enterprise operating across multiple states. His vehicle had recently traveled to cities across Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois, including Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Shboan, Southbend, and Indianapolis. So far, investigators say no victims have come forward, but Walgreens has pulled compromised cards from the shelves and is working with authorities. Sir, do you have your driver's license? Nice. ID? Don't have one? No. No. No. Don't have one? Yeah. Okay. your car. Is this car yours? Is this your car? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Okay. Do you have any picture identification? Cut. No. No. For you. Do you have a driver's license or any ID on you? Your name? Yeah. Okay. Do you have an ID for you? Yeah. Yeah. Can I see it? Yes. Yep. Thank you. What brought you up here today? To play? Yeah. What do you mean play? To play a sport? I think we're having a disconnect in the app. I think the translation app is telling me something different than what you mean. I understand that. That's why I think the translation app you're using is telling you something different than what you mean to say. Period. When I asked what you were doing here, the translation app said you were here to play. For English, that means doing a sport or an activity of some type. What kind of fun? I don't have to put that on there. I'm sorry. No, it's okay. It's okay. What kind of fun? We may have to call a translator so we can talk to each other through them. Hello, my name is Officer with the Seedwork Police Department. How are you today? I'm doing well. I have an individual out here. I'm trying to talk with him, but there seems to be a little disconnect in the uh app he's using to translate. So, I'm hoping you might be able to help me out. Okay. So, when he used his app, I asked him why he's here and it said to play then when I re like asked him about it, he said here to have fun. I'm wondering what he means by that. I didn't do anything. I just come here to travel around here. Okay. Can you ask him if he has any gift cards or anything of that nature in the vehicle? No, I just like pick them like those kind of cards like just for fun. Does he like to just look at them or what does he mean by that? Uh, I don't know anything about it. I just just randomly like pick up those like cars on street or somewhere. I don't know what's going on with those cars. Okay. All right. Yeah. Hey, so what's up? Um, I got a translator on the phone and I was at just kind of trying to ask who's like you why he was here, what stuff. He said he was up here to like the app it said to play. And I'm like, "What?" Like, "What do you mean by that?" Cuz like in English that means like you're doing a sport or activity or some type. And he's like, "Oh, no." He's like, "I'm just here to kind of have fun." And I said, "Well, what do you mean?" He's like, "Well, I just drive around the area and see." I'm like, "Okay." Um, who does it come back to? I'm It It comes back to I swear it comes back to him. Um, okay. But how do you register a car without a license? Dude, I don't, dude. We all the time. People with without a license that live in the in the states that have that that issue. They like register cars in their name all the time. They've never had a license. Okay. I talked to I talked through the translator. He said I asked him about gift cards and he said he has no idea. He just he he was just looking at them. So, he doesn't know anything about them, but whatever. Okay. All right. But he said he was looking at them. Yeah. But it is. So, all right. All right. Bye. All right. Bye. There's two duffel bags on the car. I'll have you step out and face vehicle. We'll hang on to this. Yep. That's okay. We'll put it right here just for a minute.
