On September 12, 2024 at approximately 1:48 PM in Redding, California, police stopped 38-year-old Fredrick “Rick” Phillips for speeding on Bechelli Lane. What began as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated when Phillips claimed he was “traveling” — not driving — using the bizarre sovereign citizen argument to deny the need for a driver’s license, registration, or insurance. When Phillips refused to identify himself, officers attempted to take him into custody. That’s when the encounter turned violent. Phillips became combative, repeatedly trying to put his vehicle into drive during a dangerous struggle. In a shocking twist, two brave citizens rushed in to help the officer. Their quick action likely saved the officer’s life. Had Phillips managed to get the car moving, the situation could have ended in tragedy — either dragging the officer to his death or forcing a deadly use of force. Phillips was eventually transported to a local hospital for minor injuries, cleared by medical staff, and booked into the Shasta County Jail on charges of resisting arrest and speeding. All of this unfolded because of misguided sovereign citizen beliefs — a movement often fueled by misinformation online. Don't forget to subscribe!
