It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: It was 3:41 AM on November 24, 2022. Officer Danielle Braun of the Ocala Police went to a Circle K on NE 28th Avenue. Someone said a woman was "slumped over" in a white 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan. Officer Braun and another officer spoke with the caller. Then, they knocked on the car windows. The occupant woke up. She told Officer Braun she did not have her driver's license. However, she said her name was Ella and that she was 27 years old. Officer Braun spoke with Ella and smelled alcohol. She noticed signs Ella was impaired. Ella could have had a friend pick her up. Sadly, her friend was also drunk and couldn't drive. Officer Braun thought Ella was unsafe to drive. She started a DUI investigation. Ella had to get out of the car. She then did field sobriety tests. Officer Braun began with the Walk and Turn test. Ella did not touch heel-to-toe with each step. She also failed to turn correctly the first time. She tried again, but she could not follow directions. Next was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Braun watched Ella's eyes. He saw a lack of smooth pursuit. There was distinct nystagmus at maximum deviation. The nystagmus started before 45 degrees. The next test was the One Leg Stand. Ella did not raise her foot right. She did not count aloud as told. She put her foot down too soon. Finally, she had to recite the alphabet. Ella could not say it in the right order. Ella’s eyes closed as she sat behind the wheel. An aroma of alcohol hung around her. She failed the roadside sobriety tests. Officers arrested Ella for driving under the influence. Officer Braun took Ella to the Marion County Jail in the patrol car. Officer Matthews watched as Carl Johnson’s Towing towed her car. Ella's night took a turn when she was booked. It was 4:42 AM at the Marion County Jail. She took a breath test as agreed. The test showed her BAC was .145 and .144. This was almost double the legal limit of 0.08%. Ella gave up her Miranda rights. She said she had five drinks at bars that night. Ella was charged with a DUI. This violated F.S.S. 316.193.1C. She was released later that day at 3:34 PM.
