On November 2, 2024, at approximately 11:10 PM, Officer Kayla Stalnaker with the Pullman Police Department observed a 2001 Toyota Camry drive through a red light before driving into oncoming traffic and nearly colliding head-on with a southbound vehicle. The driver then made an erratic left turn onto NW Whitman Street, and Officer Stalnaker initiated a traffic stop near the Adam & Eve store. Officer Stalnaker initiated contact with the driver, and she was identified as Karrie. As she was speaking with Karrie, Officer Stalnaker detected the odor of alcohol and observed indicators of impairment. Karrie told Officer Stalnaker that she was headed to her friend’s birthday party after driving all the way from Spokane. She admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that evening before operating a motor vehicle. Based on her suspicion of impairment, Officer Stalnaker asked Karrie to perform field sobriety exercises. After some initial hesitation, Karrie agreed to submit to field sobriety exercises. Officer Stalnaker started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Officer Stalnaker observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Karrie did not touch heel-to-toe on each step, turned improperly, and took an incorrect number of steps in both directions. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand Test. During the One Leg Stand test, Karrie did not raise her foot in the proper position, failed to count aloud, and used her arms for balance. Based on her erratic driving, her admission to consuming alcohol, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercise, Officer Stalnaker placed Karrie under arrest for driving under the influence. After she was placed in handcuffs, Karrie was transported to the Pullman Police Department for further processing. At the Pullman Police Department, Karrie agreed to provide breath samples. Her breath samples indicated BAC levels of 0.067, 0.069, 0.066, and 0.069. However, Officer Stalnaker still believed that Karrie was under the influence based on the other medications that she was currently taking. Karrie was later fingerprinted and photographed by Officer Stalnaker after spending some time in a cell. She was charged DUI in violation of RCW 46.61.502. Officer Stalnaker returned her property, advised her of her charges, and released her pending her court appearance in Colfax, Washington on November 4, 2024 at 3:00 PM. ---------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting our channel (email us for more information).
